Job Description

Position Description:

The physician shall establish a comprehensive full-time community-based practice in internal medicine, with the main focus on providing inpatient consultative services and outpatient consultative services as required. Participation in the on-call rota of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Miramichi Regional Hospital will be at the discretion of the Clinical Department Head for Internal Medicine. 

The physician reports to the Clinical Department Head of Internal Medicine or designate for all clinical, quality of care, and patient care-related issues and to the Medical Director for contractual and administrative management issues.

Job Duties:

  • Provide an outpatient service for the assessment and management of both new and follow-up patients. 
  • Provide inpatient care in ICU. 
  • Provide consultations to hospital-based patients as requested by medical or hospital staff.
  • Provide telephone consultation to colleagues.
  • Teaching responsibilities for residents and medical students.
  • Teaching responsibilities for nursing and peers as appropriate.
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings. 
  • Participate in departmental and other appropriate committees.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to address staff and patient education needs.
  • Practice in a collaborative fashion as a member of an interdisciplinary team and consult with members of other health professions as appropriate.
  • Participate in the use of departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to ensure that expected standards of care are achieved.
  • Participate in the on-call rota of the Department of Internal Medicine (ICU, Consult service, Test interpretation).
  • Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.
  • Within the confines of this scope of practice and position description, provide other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by the Chief of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Chief of Staff, Medical Director and/or Vice President of Medical Affairs.

Hours of Work:

1.0 FTE

Remuneration:

Fee for Service

Standard remuneration is Fee-for-Service which is a direct compensation between the physician and Medicare of New Brunswick. On call remuneration is provided. No source deductions can be provided.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Specialist in Internal Medicine.
  • Must be eligible for license to practice medicine in the Province of New Brunswick.
  • Must be eligible for membership with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
  • Must be eligible for malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), or equivalent, appropriate to the category of practice.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.
  • Royal college eligibility is an asset but not required.

Expected Start Date:

As soon as possible

Incentives:

$100,000.00 accompanied by a 4 year return of service.

Relocation reimbursement of up to $8,000.

Other Requirements:

  • Attend appropriate CME/CPD events as required by specialty.
  • Comply with the policies and procedures of the Department of Internal Medicine.
  • Comply with the provisions of the Hospital Act, the Regional Health Authorities Act, the Medical Services Payment Act, the Medical Pay Plan, and their regulations (where applicable).
  • Comply with the Health Authority bylaws, rules and regulations, and policies and procedures.
  • Follow the Code of Ethics of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the Canadian Medical Association.

About the Facility:

Horizon’s Miramichi Regional Hospital is situated in the northeastern part of New Brunswick in the city of Miramichi.

The hospital provides health care services to the city of Miramichi and its surrounding communities, which have broad roots in Irish and Scottish descent, and includes four vibrant Francophone communities and three progressive First Nation communities covering a catchment population of 46,000.

The hospital is a partner of the Dalhousie New Brunswick Distributed Medical Education Program and was the inaugural site for the Dalhousie Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship Program, an innovative 48-week clinical experience for third year medical students which has since expanded to include other sites in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The hospital also supports the clinical experience of nursing, therapeutic and diagnostic students.

The hospital offers a full complement of health care services, including General Surgery, Urology, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology and Oncology services. A large variety of ambulatory care services are also provided including a Healthy Kids Pediatric Ambulatory Care program.

The facility is home to state-of-the-art Diagnostic Equipment, including a 64-slice CT scanner and Accredited Digital Mammogram machines. A new ambulatory oncology clinic opened in 2017, and a new Geriatric Program opened in 2018.
