Health PEI is seeking a permanent General or Anatomical Pathologist (DCP/DMP) to join the Laboratory Services in beautiful Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

 

Looking for an exciting, contented and rewarding pathology career?  Come join our medical laboratory team consisting of seven pathologists, one hematopathologist, two clinical chemists and a medical microbiologist. Laboratory Services is a provincial, multi-site department, with pathologists primarily located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, PE. The QEH is the largest acute care hospital on PEI, and provides emergency, surgical, oncology, inpatient and ambulatory care services. Pathologists rotate (one week in six) at the Prince County Hospital in Summerside, PE, just a 45-minute drive from Charlottetown.

Our department handles more than 17,000 surgical cases, 1,600 non-gyne cytopathology, and 180 autopsies annually. We have a robust menu of on-site IHC and special stains, and expert sub-specialty referral services out of Halifax, NS.

Job Details:

  • The Physician is responsible for carrying out professional duties, including:
    • gross examination of surgical tissues;
    • microscopic examination of surgical tissues and rendering a professional opinion and diagnosis and reporting of such;
    • furthermore, as Departmental needs dictate, the physician is additionally responsible for the following professional duties:
    • performance of autopsies for both medical and legal purposes;
    • gross examination of autopsy tissues;
    • microscopic examination of autopsy tissues and rendering a professional opinion, diagnosis, or cause of death and reporting of such;
    • examination of cytology smears and rendering a professional opinion or diagnosis and reporting of such;
    • examination of peripheral smears and bone marrow specimens and rendering a professional opinion or diagnosis and reporting of such;
    • carrying out formal patient consultations at the request of a clinician;
    • for all hospitals of the province acting as a resource person for interpretation of surgical and autopsy pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology or other clinical specimens;
    • studying, investigating and evaluating developments in surgical and autopsy pathology, cytopathology and clinical pathology practices and techniques; and
    • assisting clinicians in the interpretation of test results and, when appropriate, advising on suitable investigations.
  • The Physician will act as a consultant in Pathology to other physicians and primary care providers in Prince Edward Island.The Physician will work collaboratively with other health care workers such as Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, etc. to plan and deliver competent health services.
  • The Physician will perform non-clinical duties as assigned by the Department Head and the Chief Medical Officer including quality improvement committees.
  • The Physician will provide laboratory coverage and may be required to participate equitably in an on-call schedule, based on a full-time equivalent, with individual commitment to be not more frequently than averaging 1 in 3 call schedule (122 days/year), as Departmental needs dictate. The Physician shall cooperate in the development of an on-call/vacation schedule.

Hours of Work:

  • Full-time hours for a salaried physician is defined as 37.5 hours per week; 1950 hours per year;
  • Full-time contract-for-service hours is based on a maximum of 1,725 hours per year;
  • On-call coverage as required.

Remuneration:

Health PEI offers multiple payment modality options:

  • Fee-for-Service – Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style.

Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employment benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement.

  • Salary – Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:
    • Health and dental coverage
    • Paid vacation and sick leave
    • Life insurance
    • RRSP matching

 Compensation: $224.40 per hour (equivalent to $437,580 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

  • Contract-for-Service – Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits. This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.

 Compensation: $267 per hour (equivalent to $460,575 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

Incentives:

  • Qualified and licensable candidates may be eligible for a return in service grant of up to $100,000 with a 3 year commitment to Health PEI pro-rated to the FTE.
  • Eligible moving expense reimbursement of up to $10,000 is available;
  • Opportunity to teach Medical Learners and Residents with faculty appointment at affiliated universities;
  • Access to hospital-based electronic patient record system with lab and x-ray reports from office; and
  • Other incentives as per the Physician Services Agreement.

Atlantic Registry

As of May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry.
