Hospitalist (Full-Time and Part-Time Opportunities)

Cancer Care Alberta (CCA), Department of Oncology at the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI), is accepting applications for full-time and part-time Hospitalist positions within the CCA Hospitalist Program.

These positions support inpatient oncology services at the Cross Cancer Institute and will contribute to the continued development of a sustainable 24/7 hospitalist model for inpatient cancer care.

Hospitalists provide co-managed inpatient care to medically complex cancer patients in collaboration with Oncologists and multidisciplinary care teams. Working under the direction of the Most Responsible Physician (MRP), Hospitalists participate in the assessment, treatment, follow-up, and supportive care of hospitalized oncology patients while sharing responsibility, authority, and accountability for patient care.

The Hospitalist team consists of highly skilled Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physicians with an interest in inpatient oncology care. Hospitalists play a critical role in delivering timely, high-quality care to patients undergoing cancer treatment and managing the medical complexities associated with malignancy, treatment-related toxicities, and comorbid conditions.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Hospital admissions and inpatient consultations;
• Daily patient assessments and ongoing medical management;
• Management of treatment-related toxicities and complications of cancer therapies;
• Assessment and treatment of acute and emergent medical issues;
• Interpretation of laboratory investigations and diagnostic imaging;
• Symptom management and supportive care;
• Palliative and end-of-life care;
• Chronic disease management;
• Coordination of discharge planning and transitions of care;
• Communication with referring physicians, oncologists, and community care providers regarding follow-up care;
• Participation in multidisciplinary team discussions and care planning.

Full-time and part-time opportunities are available.

As Cancer Care Alberta continues to build a comprehensive 24/7 inpatient hospitalist program, physicians will be scheduled based on operational requirements and service needs. Coverage requirements may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and statutory holiday shifts.

FTE commitments and scheduling arrangements will be determined in collaboration with the successful candidates and program leadership.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must be eligible for licensure in Family Medicine and/or General Internal Medicine with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Expertise in identifying patient health care needs, implementing treatment plans and clinical protocols, and documenting patient care accurately and comprehensively in the medical record.
• Competence in conducting patient histories and physical examinations, and completing documentation related to investigations and procedures.
• Proficiency in performing bedside clinical procedures as required, including thoracentesis, paracentesis, fine needle aspiration biopsy, lumbar puncture, and central venous access device removal.
• Competence in interpreting laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and other test results in consultation with the appropriate attending physician.
• The ability to respond in person to medical emergencies within the Institute, including Code Blue events, changes in patient condition, and urgent medical needs, as directed by the Clinical Department Head. Telephone consultation will be reserved for situations in which direct patient assessment is not required.
• Expertise in responding to inpatient consultations at the request of the Most Responsible Physician (MRP), consulting with physicians and other health care professionals in accordance with established standards of care, and notifying the attending physician of significant changes in a patient's condition or concerns related to management.
• The ability to work collaboratively with oncologists, palliative care physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical pharmacists, psychosocial oncology professionals, and primary care physicians to provide comprehensive inpatient, palliative, and symptom management care.
• Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with patients, families, nurses, attending physicians, residents, fellows, and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
• Effective communication skills, including the ability to discuss clinical conditions, treatment plans, and prognosis with patients and families, and to provide education and counselling to support understanding and informed decision-making.

• Participation in Alberta Health Services and Cancer Care Alberta quality improvement initiatives, including but not limited to Medication Reconciliation, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prophylaxis, Clinical Information System initiatives, and other quality and patient safety programs.
