Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine at Queen’s University at Kingston invites applications for a Clinical Academic Hospitalist Physician and Division Chair appointment. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing clinical care and academic/scholarly service in the field of Family Medicine. This position is to fill an existing vacancy within the University.

The Division Chair serves as the lead for the Division of Hospital Medicine within the Department of Family Medicine, responsible for guiding the work of physicians practicing at Providence Care Hospital (PCH) and Providence Transitional Care Centre. The Division Chair also serves as Clinical Director for Hospital Medicine at Providence Care. This role is responsible for assigning and balancing each member’s clinical and academic workload and ensuring the division’s work remains aligned with departmental and hospital priorities and expectations. The Clinical Director is a member of Providence Care’s Medical Advisory Committee and other committees as required.

 

In addition, the position works with the Department Head to ensure SEAMO requirements are met within the practice plan. 

The Department supports the academic development of clinical faculty in alignment with the expectations of their clinical academic appointments

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

I - The role of the Division Chair:

1.      Provides strategic and operational leadership for the division.

2.      Provides regular communication to the Department Head, Chief of Staff and senior PCH leaders.

3.      Oversees the division’s clinical, educational, and research deliverables.

4.      Reviews annual reports and supports performance review processes.

5.      Supports scheduling, service continuity, leave planning, workload management, and member accountability.

6.      Leads divisional meetings and supports clear communication within the division.

7.      Contributes to recruitment, succession planning, and long-term divisional sustainability.

8.      Serves as a key link between the division, the Department Head, and Providence Care Hospital

9.      Ensures the division works collaboratively, meets its obligations, and supports members in delivering high-quality clinical and academic work.

 

II - The role of the hospitalist:

1.      The hospitalist will work closely with other hospitalists in the Division to provide medical coverage as per the Division's needs, and the clinical needs of Providence Care.

2.      Be a member of the Hospitalist On-call group at Providence Care.

3.      The teaching role of the hospitalist is to provide a unique learning opportunity for residents and medical students interested in Hospital Medicine.

4.      The incumbent will be responsible for providing medical coverage for up to 22 patients at the Providence Transitional Care Center (PTCC).

 

III - The role of the Clinical Director:

1.      In collaboration with the Senior Director and/or Regional Director, the Clinical Director contributes to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of: 

a)      An annual Operational Plan that is reflective of Providence Care’s Strategic Directions 

b)     The Program’s annual Operating Budget 

c)      The Program’s research and education program 

d)      The Program’s human resource plan 

2.      To report regularly to the Providence Care Vice-President, Medical & Academic Affairs, and the VP, System Innovation, and the Administrative Director of the relevant area, maintaining open and direct communication

3.      To seek input from and guide the medical staff of the assigned clinical Program

4.      To maintain contact and promote stronger relationships with all stakeholders in the Program

5.      To communicate all relevant developments in the Program to medical staff

6.      To monitor the medical program team and be active in the recruitment of and hiring of physicians within the approved human resources plan, and in the performance review of medical program team members

7.      Lead and support quality improvement, education, and research within the Program

8.   If not the same, to actively communicate and collaborate with the Queen’s department head or division chair on matters about the academic mandate

Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Certification, or eligibility for certification, by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Family Medicine is preferred.

 Preference will be given to applicants who can provide evidence of a current involvement and commitment to education through the submission of an educational dossier and the identification of referees who can attest to the applicant’s educational expertise. A Master’s level degree is considered an asset.
