Job Description

Community:
Glistening water below lush mountains, dotted with parks frame the Okanagan's largest and liveliest population centre; Kelowna. Okanagan Lake is the perfect place to sail, kayak, or relax on the beach. Rolling greens offer world class golfing, minutes away from spectacular hiking and biking trails. In the winter enjoy ski resorts and skating rinks right at your fingertips. Decorated with heritage buildings and modern architecture, Kelowna offers something for everyone with orchards, vineyards and all the amenities of a major centre. From restaurants, and shops, to art galleries, live music and theatre, this city has it all. Come and experience our four seasons playground and see why life is better here.

Facility:
Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral center offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Adjacent to Kelowna General is the brand new Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features; 9 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac. Our state of the art Centennial Building also recently opened and boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, larger operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC. KGH is entering its third year of training Royal College Emergency Medicine Physicians and also participates in training Family Physicians. With the state-of-the-art Interior Heart & Surgical Centre and new medical inpatient units in the Centennial Building, dedicated psychiatry units for youth and adults, a modern maternity ward, enhanced laboratory and clinical departments in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building, and an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School, KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

Practice:
Excellent opportunity for a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join the expanding Psychiatry department at Kelowna General Hospital. Discover the rewards of career satisfaction working within a strong culture of teamwork while delivering excellence in care! In this position you will be part of a team of dedicated psychiatrists providing inpatient and outpatient child and youth mental health services within the hospital and the steadily expanding local community. Those interested or with experience in DDMH would be welcomed.

Hospital work would involve psychiatric assessment and treatment of patients up to and including 18 years of age, who are usually admitted through the Emergency Department. This service is supported by a Mental Health Liaison worker to assist with access to community-based programs. In addition, KGH is the home to the Interior Health tertiary Adolescent Psychiatry Unit which offers a specialized inpatient program for youth ages 12-17 who are struggling with significant psychiatric symptoms, such as psychosis, mood disorders, or anxiety disorders that require an extended stay for assessment and treatment planning. The Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit has 8 beds and the program runs seven days per week. Length of stay varies between 10 days to several weeks.

Evaluation of our patients is carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising of nurses, youth and family counselors, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, teachers, psychiatrists and other disciplines as needed. Our assessment process requires the active participation of adolescents, their families and community Mental Health support services.

Duties will include, but not be limited to, patient assessment and treatment, collaboration with clinicians and managers, and assistance with the development and maintenance of appropriate programs, policies, and procedures. You will have active staff privileges at RIH and be the Most Responsible Physician when your patients are admitted to hospital. You will assume care for a portion of new child & youth psychiatric admissions. Participation in the general on call schedule is expected.

Community work would involve supporting family physicians, pediatricians, and child & youth mental health services. A collaborative program exists to serve the needs of youth in transition to adulthood. Subspecialty areas include eating disorders and substance use disorders. Kelowna is also one of seven BC cities to have a Foundry Centre in the community. Foundry is a province wide initiative that offers young people ages 12-24 health and wellness resources, services and supports – online and through integrated service centres.

This role also offers teaching opportunities to medical students and residents as KGH is affiliated with UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program.
We are excited to add passionate and hardworking experienced candidates or new graduates to our team at KGH. Apply today to live work and play where others only vacation! It's better here!
