Locum Opportunity – Hospitalist Medicine

The Department of Hospitalist Medicine at the Timmins and District Hospital is urgently seeking one locum Hospitalist to provide coverage for the period noted above. 

The Timmins and District Hospital is a 215-bed district referral and teaching hospital serving a local population of 41,000 and a catchment area of 110,000 in Northeastern Ontario. The hospital provides a full range of services including Medical, Surgical, Critical Care, Maternal/Child, Long Term Care, and Mental Health.

Details of TADH’s Hospitalist Program

TADH typically has a 4-Hospitalist service with an inpatient census of approximately 60 patients. Each Hospitalist generally manages a list of approximately 15 patients, including 0–3 ALC patients.

For this coverage week, TADH is adding a fifth Hospitalist to provide additional support to the service. The fifth Hospitalist will share the patient load equally with the other Hospitalists based on the current census. This will also include equal participation in MHU consult coverage, as there is no separate backup/MHU physician scheduled for this week.

Other program details include:

• One Hospitalist covers admissions for 1/4 of the week, with admissions typically coming from the ICU or ER. Emergency physicians complete admission orders and hold calls overnight (23:00–07:00) before handing off.
• Admissions are divided equally among the Hospitalists, with patient lists balanced each morning.
• Hospitalists are on call for their own patients during the week.
• Strong specialist support including Internal Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Psychiatry, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, Addictions Medicine, and Nephrology.
• Excellent Diagnostic Imaging department with state-of-the-art CT and MRI.
• EMR: Meditech Expanse.
• Coverage week runs Friday 08:00 to the following Friday 08:00.

Remuneration

• $14,000 – $16,000 per week, comprised of:
  • $4,500 hospital stipend
  • $386.44/day honorarium
  • 100% of billings (estimated $6,500–$8,500)
• Travel and accommodations reimbursed as per the Northern Specialist Locum Program (NSLP) guidelines.
• 1 x Hospital Paid Urgent Incentive of $2,500 for the week

Position Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold CCFP designation.
• Maintain CMPA coverage.
• Hold an independent CPSO practice license and OHIP billing number.
• Possess excellent clinical skills and a strong commitment to patient safety and high standards of care.
• Family Physicians or Internists with Hospitalist experience are preferred.
