Alberta Health Services (AHS), Edmonton Zone invites applications for the role of Medical Director, Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU).
This 0.20 FTE position governed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, reports to the Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH), Child Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that clinical care is provided at the highest standards and that support for research, education and quality assurance/improvement are available.
The Medical Director, PCICU is responsible for the coordination of care provided in the PCICU by the medical team, evaluation and consistency of care provided, reporting and coordination of care at the Zone, Provincial and Network (Western Canadian Congenital Heart Network) Level. The medical director provides leadership to a group of highly trained pediatric specialists in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care and will be responsible for ensuring clinical care is provided at the highest standards and that support for research, innovation, education and quality assurance/improvement are available. The medical director is responsible for coordinating the care of the PCICU services within the Stollery Cardiac Program (SCP), by representation at the SCP Executive.
This position provides input into the development of policies and criteria for procedures as they relate to Child Health.
Other accountabilities include:
- Quality– ensure the ongoing monitoring of clinical/medical practice; including the development/maintenance of processes and practices to promote clinical standards of care.
- Resource Management – support recruitment and retention of physicians to the section, scheduling, and participate in planning to anticipate future needs.
- Physician Performance Review – support bylaws processes as needed, and performance reviews of physician staff appointed within the section. This is inclusive of reviewing and recommending privileges for physicians within the section.
- Academic Liaison – ensuring support within the PCICU for medical learners with close coordination with program directors of relevant residency programs including Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Anesthesia.
The position has an expected start date of approximately April 1, 2026 and an expected term of 3 years.

They will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and be considered a strong clinician by peers. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the above qualities during a sustained period of independent and highly related clinical practice.
Candidates must be registered or eligible for registration with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent, eligible to work in Canada, and be eligible for or have current licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
