The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), Integrated Northern Area invites applications for the position of palliative care physician to provide physician support (0.5 FTE 97.5 hours) for palliative care services in the North East Area of the province (Nipawin, Tisdale or Melfort).

The physician will provide palliative care services for days contracted, including some weekends and statutory holidays. The physician will provide a support to palliative care clients and families to assist in meeting identified palliative needs. This may include assessment, management, and ongoing support to patients on the palliative care service. Support may include consults in hospital, continuing care, home visits, and to act as a resource for other members of the care team.

They will provide medical direction and leadership as required to nurses, other physicians, pharmacists, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding the management of patients, end-of-life decisions, and other palliative care areas. The physician will be required to complete timely and legible documentation. This may include history and physical examinations, management plans, follow-up plans, orders, and consultation back to referring teams.

Qualifications:

The candidate will hold certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada or from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Individuals with additional training in palliative medicine will deserve preference. Successful applicants will be eligible for a regular licence to practise in Saskatchewan from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.

The successful candidate must be licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
In accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.

Other responsibilities of the Palliative Physician - INH

The physician will provide medical input into the review, development, and ongoing revision of protocols, policies, and procedures applicable to the Palliative Care Services program within the SHA when needed.


The physician will mentor other members of the care team providing palliative care services to assist them in meeting generally accepted palliative care standards. There may be need for education sessions for other staff and education of medical learners.


The physician will participate in home care team palliative rounds where applicable. They will provide support to the care team and can offer suggestions on management. They may be asked to attend family conferences to assist in goals of care discussion for patients with a life limiting illness.


The physician will participate in the development of care protocols, clinical practice guidelines, etc., to improve the standard of palliative care in the area and will participate in data collection and other quality improvement activities and program development.


The physician will attend and participate in palliative care team meetings as applicable (usually monthly).
