Job Description

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology in partnership with Alberta Health, invites applications for a MS Specialist Clinical Neurologist Educator to be based at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic and between the University of Alberta Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.

 

The Division of Neurology comprises 60 neurologists in academic and community practice and 3 scientists.  Internationally recognized research is conducted and published from UA.  All subspecialties of neurology are represented among the faculty in addition to stroke including:  Autoimmune and Multiple Sclerosis, Cognitive Neurology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular and ALS, Autonomic Neurophysiology, and Neuropalliative Clinic.  We have five research chairs within our Division.  Neurology holds multiple CIHR, NIH, PCORI and other prestigious external grants.  Our Neurology residency program is strong and accepts 8 residents/year.  We have vital clinical and research fellowship programs, including MS and central neuroinflammatory diseases.

Alberta has one of the highest rates of MS in the world. The Kaye Edmonton MS Clinic is a highly successful multi-disciplinary MS program renowned across Canada for comprehensive care of people living with MS and other central neuro-inflammatory conditions. There is an active clinical research program, MS imaging research program, and basic neuroscience research in MS with the UAlberta MS Research Centre. The academic division has close ties to the University of Alberta Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), a discovery and translational research collaborative. The educational program in Neurology spans all levels of medical education, from first-year medical students, residents, graduate students, and comprehensive fellowship programs. The Division has a well-regarded active residency training program.   In the delivery of clinical care and education, the Division is ably supported by a large, committed, and collaborative group of community-based neurologists.

The successful candidate must have:

-          MD degree (or equivalent)

-          Completed residency training in Adult Neurology

-          Eligible to be certified in Neurology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada

-          Completed a multiple sclerosis fellowship program

-          Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta

-          Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status

 

Considered an asset:

-          A Masters’ of Medical Education

-          Commitment to education of neurology residents and fellows

-          Experience and interest in participation of MS and CNS inflammatory research activities

 

Key accountabilities of the Fee for Service Multiple Sclerosis Clinician Educator position will include, but will not be limited to:

 

Outpatient and Call/Inpatient Clinical Responsibilities:

-          Diagnosis and care for those with multiple sclerosis and central neuroinflammatory disorders through participation in the MS program for those Albertans in the Edmonton corridor, North corridor, Central corridor and Northwest Territories

-          Inpatient/Call - Care for those in the Edmonton corridor, North corridor, Central corridor and Northwest Territories presenting with possible acute neurologic conditions between the University of Alberta hospital and Royal Alexandra hospital

 

Academic Responsibilities:

-          To be a part of and contribute to the Division of Neurology academic initiatives such as strategic planning

-          Participate in Divisional meetings, retreats and neuroscience Rounds

-          Contribute to multiple sclerosis & CNS inflammatory research efforts, local and multi-centre

-          Ability to create and sustain a movement disorders research program, independently and as part of collaborative teams

-          Contribute to quality improvement activities of the division, corridor, and site

-          Contribute to and attend neuroinflammatory rounds

 

Education Responsibilities:

-          Education of undergraduate medical students, residents (rotating and neurology), and fellows – classroom and bedside

-          Supervise residents, fellows and graduate students on research activities

-          OSCE participation

-          Enthusiasm for exploring opportunities in education:  undergraduate medical school, residency program, fellowship, continuing education

-          Aid in coordinating the MS rotation for residents

 

The successful candidate will report to the Divisional Director of Neurology at the University of Alberta and the Edmonton Zone Lead of Neurology for AHS. Remuneration will be based on the Fee-for-Service (FFS) schedule.

 

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
