Job Description

The University of Alberta (UA), Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a Neurologist to be based primarily at the Sturgeon Community Hospital (SCH), but with some overlap with the University of Alberta Hospital/Kaye Edmonton Clinic. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as one of the world’s top 50 medical schools and one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University has over 38,000 students and over 15,000 faculty and staff.

The Division of Neurology comprises 60 neurologists in academic and community practice and 3 Scientists.  UA is one of the most extensive stroke programs in Canada.  Internationally recognized research is conducted and published by UA.  All subspecialties of Neurology are represented among the faculty, including Autoimmune and Multiple Sclerosis, Cognitive Neurology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular and ALS, Autonomic Neurophysiology.  We have five research chairs within our division. Neurology holds multiple CIHR, NIH, PCORI and other prestigious external grants.  Our Neurology residency program is strong and accepts eight residents/year; in addition, we have many subspecialty fellowship programs. Overall, we provide a rich training and work environment across the division. The Sturgeon Community Hospital is a thriving community hospital, with a rich history, opening in 1970. The SCH is dedicated to building a healthier community serving St. Albert, Sturgeon County and surrounding communities, as well as North Edmonton areas. It offers a range of specialized outpatient clinics and resources in addition to emergency care, inpatient medicine, surgical and critical care services. The academic division has close ties to the University of Alberta Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), a discovery and translational research collaborative.

The successful candidate will have an MD degree, or equivalent.  He or she will be eligible to be certified in Neurology by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.  In addition, they will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Remuneration will be based on the Fee-for-Service (FFS) schedule.

Key accountabilities of the Sturgeon Neurologist will include, but not be limited to, emergency and inpatient neurology expertise and patient management, including seizure & epilepsy management, acute and subacute stroke diagnosis and management, emergency presentations of neurologic diseases including multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders of the CNS and PNS, emergency headache management, peripheral nerve, neuromuscular, and muscle disorders in the inpatient setting and intensive care unit. They will contribute to research in the acute and inpatient settings related to neurology, in addition to quality improvement work in neurology patient emergency and inpatient flow through at the SCH. They will participate in Urgent Neurology Clinic and Stroke Prevention Clinic, mainly at the SCH, but also at Kaye Edmonton Clinic in Urgent Neurology Clinic and Stroke Prevention Clinic as centralized clinic booking is established. The successful applicant will be expected to integrate with the Sturgeon inpatient, emergency, and outpatient teams, in addition to the Division of Neurology, participating in divisional meetings and neuroscience rounds. This is a teaching appointment and involves regular teaching and supervision of residents, fellows, and medical students. The individual will have opportunity to be on inpatient ward services with learners at University of Alberta Hospital, depending on the volume of needs at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.  This is a new position, intended to grow the neurology program at SCH over time.

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment (Clinical Faculty) in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.  Other responsibilities include clinical faculty appointments at the University of Alberta, teaching undergraduate learners, residents (rotating and neurology), and fellows. The successful applicant will be a full member of the Division of Neurology, participating in Divisional academic and clinical initiatives. EEG reading is preferred but not necessary.

Interested candidates are asked to APPLY ONLINE with a letter of intent and curriculum vitae outlining their education, qualifications, fellowship training, education or research experience, along with three letters of reference.

Applications will begin being reviewed 2 weeks after ad posted for Canadians, however, the competition will remain open until the position is filled. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted.

The University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services are committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all qualified persons. We encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.
