Ophthalmologist – Glaucoma Specialist

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta & Alberta Health Services

Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FOMD), University of Alberta are recruiting an ophthalmologist who has expertise in glaucoma surgery. The Department’s vision is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education and research.  

The successful candidate will have medical and surgical experience and expertise in the identification and treatment of glaucoma disease.  The University of Alberta seeks a candidate with a proven track record of publication in peer reviewed journals. Research and clinical teaching experience is essential. 

Job Description

Clinical Practice:

Full time glaucoma clinical practice in a community-based setting, except one (1) day per month will be on-site at the RAH Eye Institute.  Surgical Practice:

The operating time is currently shared amongst four full-time glaucoma surgeons.  No new OR will be made available as part of this recruitment.  A minimum of two (2) operating days per month will be provided between RAH and chartered surgical facilities. 

Call Responsibilities:

Comprehensive ophthalmology call responsibilities will be shared amongst the 30+ surgical ophthalmologists in the zone (separate from retina specialty call).  In-person staffing of the emergency room follow-up clinics is required when on-call.

Teaching and Research:

There will be teaching responsibilities involving medical students and residents.  Teaching and research will be enabled through an appointment as Clinical Faculty within the University of Alberta FOMD.

Committee Work:

It is expected that the successful candidate will assist in improving the lives of patients, learners and ophthalmologists in Edmonton by volunteering to participate on a variety of committees.

Applicants must be licensed in good standing, or eligible for licensure, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).  Candidate will have completed a residency in ophthalmology and a one (1)-year glaucoma fellowship. The candidate must be a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Qualified candidates should send a letter of intent outlining their clinical, teaching and research interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three professional references to the attention of:
