Job Description

Opportunity

Alberta Health Services is recruiting independently licensed physicians to join the Orthopedic Inpatient Service at the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH). This is a high-impact opportunity to help shape and deliver a modern orthopedic hospitalist model within Alberta’s only quaternary academic hospital.

Physicians joining the service will contribute to the care of complex elective and emergent orthopedic inpatients while working in a collaborative environment with orthopedic surgeons, learners, nursing, allied health, and hospital operations teams.

The UAH is a major tertiary and quaternary referral centre with strong academic connections to the University of Alberta and close clinical interfaces with trauma, critical care, internal medicine, anesthesiology, rehabilitation, and perioperative services.

Position Summary

The Orthopedic Hospitalist provides comprehensive inpatient medical care for admitted orthopedic surgical patients, including patients with both elective and urgent orthopedic conditions.

The role supports timely assessment, optimization, daily medical management, discharge readiness, and coordination of care across the inpatient stay. As the service evolves, the successful candidate will help strengthen workflows, care standards, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Multiple positions are available, both part time and full time. Preferences will be discussed with qualified applicants.

Key Responsibilities

·         Provide inpatient medical assessment and management for orthopedic surgical patients.

·         Complete admissions, consultations, and daily rounds in collaboration with the orthopedic service.

·         Address urgent ward issues during assigned day, evening, or overnight coverage.

·         Order and interpret investigations, respond to results, and support timely clinical decision-making.

·         Participate in discharge planning, documentation, and transitions of care.

·         Collaborate closely with orthopedic surgeons, nursing, allied health, and other consulting services.

·         Contribute to service refinement, quality improvement, and development of the orthopedic hospitalist model.

·         Support an academic practice environment that may include interaction with learners and residents.

Schedule and Practice Environment

·         The service is designed to support day, evening, and potential night coverage, with shifts currently structured as 8 – 10 hour blocks.

·         Scheduling is intended to provide flexible staffing and dependable inpatient coverage across the week.

·         The role offers focused hospital-based practice with no outpatient panel requirements.

Why Join This Opportunity

·         Practice in a quaternary academic centre with exposure to complex patients and interdisciplinary care.

·         Help shape a developing initiative of the orthopedic hospitalist model to a Hospitalist MRP model, building a high functioning multidisciplinary team.  This will be a future iterative process with the hospitalist group requiring broad stakeholder engagement and development.

·         Work at full scope in a role centered on acute inpatient medicine and perioperative care.

·         Join a collaborative environment with strong links to education, quality improvement, academic research, and system transformation.

·         Explore implementation of a formal academic hospitalist training program.

Application Process

To apply, please submit a curriculum vitae, a letter of interest, and the names of three references through the DoctorJobsAlberta posting (Doctor Jobs Careers - Jobs). Applications will be reviewed as received and will remain open until the positions are filled.

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Qualifications

Applicants must be independently licensed, or eligible for independent licensure, in Alberta.

·         Training backgrounds that may be well suited to this role include Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, or another relevant discipline with strong inpatient experience.

·         Experience working collaboratively with surgical teams and in fast-paced hospital environments is an asset.

·         Interest in academic medicine, quality improvement, and service innovation is an asset.

This position is not Eligible for AHS sponsorship of a CPSA Practice Readiness Assessment.
