Job Description

Description:

The Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services, Section of Otolaryngology, University of Calgary is seeking an Otolaryngologist – Head & Neck Surgeon for a Contingent Term academic position at the Clinical Lecturer or Assistant Professor level.

The successful applicant will dedicate 25% of their time to research, education and related activities. Applicants should demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed publications, including publications as first or senior author. Educating, supervising, mentoring and training medical students, residents, graduate students, and postgraduate fellows is an important part of this position, as is academic engagement and leadership. Candidates will be expected to show evidence of collaboration and leadership in research and education, including involvement in, and preferably, leadership of multi-disciplinary research teams. A successful transition to academic and departmental leadership is expected.

The successful candidate will provide subspecialty head and neck surgical oncology clinical services in collaboration with the three existing head and neck surgeons and members of the Section of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Opportunities in all areas of head and neck surgery including transoral laser microsurgery and microvascular reconstructive surgery are available. Clinical activities will be performed at the Foothills Medical Centre, Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (ambulatory clinics) and the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

The successful applicant will be an integral member within an established and high-performing clinical / translational head and neck research program; the Ohlson Research initiative (ORI). The ORI is an endowed research program within the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute comprised of 3 pillars: 1) Head and Neck Tumour Biology, 2) Clinical Effectiveness Research, and 3) Virtual platforms for surgical training, surgical planning and education.  The ORI employs a team which supports these activities. Associated tumour banks and prospective clinical databases are maintained and available for ORI researchers.

Calgary is less than an hour's drive from the majestic Rocky Mountains and boasts the most extensive urban pathway and bikeway network in North America.

Candidates are encouraged but not required to provide any relevant information about their experience and/or career interruptions to allow for a fair assessment of their application. Selection committees have been instructed to consider, and be sensitive to the impact of career interruptions, when assessing the candidate’s research productivity.
