Job Description

Alberta Health Services and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FOMD), University of Alberta are recruiting a full-time Pediatric and Comprehensive Ophthalmologist (1.0 FTE). The Department’s vision is to lead patient-centered eye care through outstanding and integrated service, education and research.

This is a new net-addition position to the ophthalmology complement in the Edmonton Corridor, based primarily at the Stollery Children’s Hospital (STO) and the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH). The Eye Institute of Alberta (EIA) serves a population of over 3 million people across the Edmonton region, northern Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest and Yukon Territories. The Stollery Children’s Hospital eye clinic is one of the busiest in Canada, with over 11,000 visits per year.

The University of Alberta Ophthalmology Residency program is highly regarded nationally and internationally. Current areas of research strength include clinical trials, ocular genetics, and tele-ophthalmology.

Clinical Practice

Full-time blended ophthalmology practice of pediatric and comprehensive ophthalmology. A minimum of 30% of clinical practice will be dedicated to pediatric ophthalmic care.  Two (2) clinic days per month will be based at the Stollery Children’s Hospital clinic to support the pediatric component, with the remainder of clinical activity being community-based. Clinical care encompasses the full scope of both pediatric and comprehensive ophthalmic conditions, including assessment and management of pediatric and adult patients across the continuum of care. The successful candidate will participate in Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening.

Surgical Practice

Three (3) operating days per month will be provided within the Edmonton Zone, between the Royal Alexandra hospital, Stollery, and Chartered Surgical Facilities, including one (1) day with pediatric anesthesia and nursing support dedicated to pediatric cases, including intraocular surgery.

Surgical practice reflects the blended nature of the role, encompassing both comprehensive and pediatric ophthalmic surgical procedures.

Call Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the shared Ophthalmology on-call schedule for the Edmonton Zone, with call duties distributed among ophthalmologists across the zone. Pediatric and adult call duties are shared between ophthalmologists in the Edmonton Zone.

Teaching and Research

Active participation in the academic mission is required. This includes regular teaching of medical students and ophthalmology residents, delivering lectures during protected Academic Half Day teaching time, and serving as a mentor for learners including fellows, residents, and medical students across both pediatric and comprehensive ophthalmology domains. Teaching will be enabled through an appointment as a Clinical Academic Colleague within the University of Alberta FOMD.

Research

The successful candidate will participate in eye care and ocular disease research relevant to their scope of practice, contributing to the academic and investigative activities of the ophthalmology section and serving as a mentor for learners including fellows, residents, and medical students.

Committee Work

It is expected that the successful candidate will assist in improving the lives of patients, learners, and ophthalmologists in Edmonton by volunteering to participate on a variety of departmental committees and completing all mandatory AHS administrative requirements, including AIVA, Connect Care EUPA, AHS Indigenous Awareness Training, and AHS privacy training.
