ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
NL Health Services – Eastern Urban Zone invites expressions of interest for the position of Division Head, Ophthalmology within the Surgical Services Program, effective August 30, 2026. This is a term appointment of three (3) years with a possibility of an additional three-year appointment upon approval of the Clinical Chief, Chief of Staff, and Vice President, Medical Services.
This position is suitable for a physician seeking to combine a leadership role with an existing clinical practice in Ophthalmology. The Division Head will provide service leadership and overall supervision of clinical care across the Division, working collaboratively with the Clinical Chief and Program Leadership Team.
The Division Head is accountable to the Clinical Chief of Surgical Services and the Senior Medical Director of NL Health Services.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Ophthalmology (or equivalent)
- Current appointment to the medical staff of NL Health Services — Eastern Urban Zone
- Demonstrates commitment to patient-focused care and evidence-based practice
- Experience and/or academic preparation in health care management or leadership considered an asset

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Division Head of Ophthalmology will have such responsibilities as assigned. Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Provide service leadership and overall supervision of clinical care — both inpatient and ambulatory — delivered by members of the Division
- Convene and chair a minimum of five (5) Division meetings per calendar year, including review of clinical affairs, liaison with other professional groups such as nursing, social work, and physiotherapy, and liaison within the Program Leadership Team
- Coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in liaison with individual program directors as required
- Promote research activities within the Division
- Coordinate interdisciplinary collaboration for teaching and research
- Address complaints against physicians at the direction of the Clinical Chief
- Conduct Physician Performance Appraisals for physicians in the Division at the direction of the Clinical Chief
- Support person-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements

REMUNERATION
Annual stipend to be confirmed and discussed with the successful candidate.
