RHEUMATOLOGY OPPORTUNITIES AT LAKERIDGE HEALTH

Full-Time, Part-Time and Locum Appointment Opportunities

Lakeridge Health | Durham Region, Ontario

Design your practice. Build something meaningful. Shape the future of care.

Lakeridge Health is seeking two Rheumatologists to join our growing, high-impact team. This is an opportunity to build a meaningful clinical practice within a large, multi-site hospital system while contributing to medical education, system improvement, and the evolution of a community-based academic health system grounded in high-quality, equitable care.

Whether you are early in your career, an experienced physician seeking a collegial and dynamic environment, or an internationally trained physician eligible for independent practice in Ontario, Lakeridge Health offers a supportive platform for clinical excellence, professional growth, and long-term impact.

The Opportunity

We are recruiting two physicians to support an evolving Rheumatology ambulatory clinic and inpatient consultative service across Lakeridge Health.

The role may include:

  • Clinical care in established outpatient ambulatory clinics and inpatient consultative service to Hospitalists and General Internists
  • Collaboration within a multi-site, interprofessional care environment
  • Participation in quality improvement, program development, and system transformation
  • Teaching and supervision of medical students, residents, and other learners
  • Opportunities for leadership, mentorship, and academic engagement over time

 Why Join Lakeridge Health

A strong and growing academic mandate

Lakeridge Health is advancing as a community-based academic health system, with a growing focus on teaching, learning, and system innovation. Physicians play a central role in shaping this environment through education, mentorship, and program development.

Queen’s partnership and distributed medical education

We are home to the Queen’s University–Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program satellite campus and support learners through the QBOL Family Medicine Residency Program, alongside a broad and growing learner base across academic partners and disciplines.

This creates meaningful opportunities for:

  • Teaching and supervision
  • Preceptorship and mentorship
  • Academic program development
  • Academic promotion
  • Contribution to distributed medical education

LHEARN: education, simulation, and innovation infrastructure

Physicians have access to LHEARN (Learning, Health Education and Research Network) and the LHEARN Centre, a core platform supporting education, simulation, and applied learning across Lakeridge Health.

This includes:

  • A dedicated education and learning environment
  • Four simulation labs
  • Simulation-based teaching and curriculum opportunities
  • Interprofessional education infrastructure
  • Health Sciences Library expertise and point-of-care tools
  • Opportunities to engage in experiential and simulation-based learning innovation

Commitment to health equity and population health

Lakeridge Health is committed to advancing health equity and population health as core components of high-quality care. We serve a diverse and rapidly growing population across Durham Region and are focused on understanding and addressing the unique needs of the communities we serve.

Physicians are supported to:

  • Deliver care that is responsive to diverse patient populations and lived experiences
  • Contribute to reducing barriers to access, quality, and outcomes
  • Participate in initiatives that advance equitable, culturally safe, and inclusive care
  • Engage in program development and system improvement that reflects population health needs

This commitment is reflected in our clinical programs, partnerships, and ongoing efforts to integrate equity into care delivery, education, and system design.

Structured onboarding and mentorship

We recognize that transitioning into a new hospital environment, or into independent practice, requires support.

Depending on role and context, this may include:

  • Structured onboarding and integration
  • Departmental mentorship and collegial support
  • Practice transition support for early-career physicians
  • Peer support within a collaborative department environment

Professional growth and leadership development

We are committed to developing physician leaders at all stages of their careers.

Opportunities may include:

  • Participation in leadership development programs
  • Engagement with internal and external leadership development opportunities, including alignment with organizations such as the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL)
  • Involvement in departmental or organizational leadership roles
  • Quality improvement and system transformation initiatives
  • Teaching, curriculum development, and academic leadership
  • Mentorship of learners and emerging physicians

Research and scholarship opportunities

Physicians with interests in research or scholarship may have opportunities to engage in:

  • Education scholarship
  • Program evaluation and quality improvement research
  • Collaborative academic initiatives
  • Applied and community-based research aligned with system priorities

A more supported physician practice environment

Lakeridge Health is actively strengthening the infrastructure that supports physicians in practice. This includes:

  • Clear governance and leadership structures
  • Enhanced onboarding and integration processes
  • Evolving physician performance and professional practice supports
  • Policy frameworks supporting fairness, consistency, and sustainability

We are committed to creating environments where individuals feel safe to speak up and where concerns are addressed through fair, transparent, and respectful approaches. This includes a focus on early resolution, restorative practices, and supporting teams to address concerns constructively while maintaining accountability.

A system that is growing and evolving

Lakeridge Health is a multi-site system serving one of Ontario’s fastest-growing regions, with ongoing investment in clinical programs, education, and system capacity. Physicians have opportunities to contribute to program growth, model-of-care design, and system-level innovation.

Live and work in Durham Region

Durham Region offers a strong quality of life with access to urban centres, waterfront, green space, and family-friendly communities, all within close proximity to Toronto and major academic institutions.

Academic and Teaching Opportunities

Physicians interested in education will find a strong platform for involvement in:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
  • Distributed and community-based teaching models
  • Interprofessional education
  • Simulation-based teaching through LHEARN
  • Learner supervision, assessment, and mentorship
  • Academic program development and educational innovation
  • Opportunities to engage in scholarship related to health equity, population health, and inclusive care

Qualifications

Required

Applicants must:

  • Hold, or be eligible for licensure, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), including eligibility for an Independent Practice Certificate or a Restricted/Provisional certificate as applicable.
  • Be certified, or eligible for certification, in Rheumatology
  • Be eligible for hospital privileges at Lakeridge Health
  • Demonstrate strong clinical judgment and communication skills
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high-quality, patient-centred, and equitable care
  • Work effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment

Candidates must possess valid authorization to work in Canada, including Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid Canadian work permit.

We encourage candidates to apply based on their qualifications and eligibility. Prior Canadian work experience is not required at the application stage where it is not a bona fide requirement for the role.
