Job Description
The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Assist is seeking Courtesy Surgical Assists.
Successful candidates would have primary affiliation with the EGH site and be part of the EGH assistant on-call roster. There would also be opportunities to assist at BCH (both elective and on-call). Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not required. Excellent communication skills and the desire to contribute in a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care are needed. Remuneration is fee-for-service supplemented by an on-call stipend when applicable.
Accountabilities
The Surgical Assistant provides direct support to the surgeon by:
· Managing instruments, retracting tissue, suctioning, suturing and cutting sutures
· Maintains a sterile field and anticipates the surgeon’s needs throughout the procedure
· Monitors the patient’s status and communicates concerns to the surgical team
· Operates or assists with specialized surgical equipment as needed
Job Qualifications
The candidates must have a Certificate of Registration to practice from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario. Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not a requirement. The position requires excellent communication skills in English. Additional languages are considered an asset as we serve a highly diverse population.
