Job Description
What to Expect:
The Acute Care Unit has 23 beds; all specialties admitted: Peds, palliative, cardiac, surgical, medical, psychiatric, etc. Critical patients are usually transferred to tertiary care centres.
Schedule
The hospitalist will be scheduled for a one-week rotation, from Friday to the following Friday’s handover, providing 24-hour care for all existing and new patients. They will work closely with the Active Care staff and Discharge Planner to ensure appropriate patient management and will participate in multidisciplinary rounds every Tuesday at 11 a.m. to plan ongoing care and patient disposition.
Admissions
The hospitalist will assess and admit all new patients to the program. During the day (8:00–17:00), once the decision to admit is made, the ED physician will notify the hospitalist, who will assess the patient in the ED, write admission orders, and dictate the admission history and physical. In the evenings and overnight (17:00–8:00), the ED physician will write holding orders and manage the patient until morning. Verbal handover may occur that night or the next morning, as appropriate.
Mentorship
The Notre-Dame Hospital has a mentorship program in place to help new graduates and new locums in their first rotation. Our staff is remunerated to offer you the support you need. We like to call it, your call a friend option.
On-Site Support
The unit is staffed with RNs, RPNs, and PSWs. A desk nurse is available Monday to Friday, and an Acute Care Manager is on site weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A director is on call 24/7. Social workers and the Discharge Planner from the FHT are also available to support patient care.
