Hamilton Health Sciences is seeking a term (locum) academic Cardiac Surgeon starting January 1,2026, initially for a one year period, with the possibility to transition into a permanent position. The surgeon will be based at the Hamilton General Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario which serves a catchment area of more than 2.5 million residents providing comprehensive care across the sites of Hamilton Health Sciences and performs over 1,600 open-heart cases annually. The service provides tertiary and quaternary level care to patients within the catchment area and plays an essential role in the support of other programs including Interventional Cardiology, Thrombosis, and Vascular Surgery programs at the Hamilton Health Sciences.
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate experience and training in the management of Cardiac Surgery appropriate for an academic tertiary care level referral centre. Formal fellowship training in the areas of minimally invasive, arrythmia or catheter-based valve surgeries would be an asset. They will be expected to participate in Clinical Care and there may be an opportunity to participate in the Acute Care Surgery Service. They will be expected to have good interpersonal and collaborative skills with initiative to further advance the clinical productivity of the Cardiac Surgery Program, including local and regional educational and quality initiatives. Research productivity and a plan for developing a research program are considered an asset.
Applicants must be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Cardiac Surgery and have completed fellowship training in Cardiac Surgery, with preference given to accredited fellowships. The candidate must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario.
