Job Description

Academic General Hospitalist – Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery (www.surgery.queensu.ca) at Queen’s University is seeking four Academic General Hospitalists for four geographically full-time positions. Growth of the Department of Surgery and high patient volumes have necessitated the establishment of these additional hospitalist positions, which require Internists or Family Physicians, with relevant clinical experience, to manage the acute care patients. The Hospitalist service provides excellent care for patients on two Surgical Units composed of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and second unit composed of Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. The average census on each unit is between 30 – 35 patients. Academic General Hospitalists will work on a rotational schedule, providing support to all the above surgical units. The successful candidates will work with a combination of Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Fellows associated with some of these services. In addition to a major focus of providing exemplary clinical service, interested individuals would be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to the administrative functions of the University and Hospitals. It is expected interested individuals will exhibit strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment, as well as provide evidence of a strong academic portfolio with demonstrable teaching experience.

Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent), and have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

The successful candidate will be a full-time member of the Department of Surgery and participate in the Surgery Hospitalist on-call schedule at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the teaching, supervision, and mentorship of undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students and fellows.
Queen’s University is recognized nationally for the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs, which attracts outstanding students. Queen’s University is an integral part of the vibrant Kingston community in the heart of the Thousand Islands region of southeastern Ontario. It has a community spirit and amenities unmatched by any other Canadian university. The University and the region offer an outstanding academic and community environment (www.queensu.ca).

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. These requirements were suspended May 1, 2022. However, they remain in effect for students, staff, and faculty in workplaces, including hospitals, where patient care is provided and/or where the work duties or educational requirements of the position involve or support patient care.

The University invites applications from all qualified individuals. Queen's is strongly committed to employment equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and encourages applications from Black, racialized/visible minority and Indigenous/Aboriginal people, women, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQA+ persons. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority. To comply with Federal Laws, the University is obliged to gather statistical information about how many applicants from each job vacancy are Canadian citizens/permanent residents of Canada, applicants need not identify their country of origin or citizenship, however, all applicants must include one of the following statements: “I am a Canadian citizen/permanent resident of Canada” OR, “I am not a Canadian citizen/permanent resident of Canada”. Applications that do not include this information will be deemed incomplete.

The review of applications is on-going and will continue until the position is filled. Applications are to include a letter summarizing expertise, qualifications, and accomplishments relevant to the position, a CV, and the names and full contact information of three referees. Complete applications are to be directed to: Dr. Ross Walker, Head, Department of Surgery, Queen's University, Victory 3, Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, Ontario, K7L 2V7, Fax: (***-***-**** (🔒 Premium), Email: ***@kingstonhsc.ca (🔒 Premium).
