ACADEMIC POSITION – RHEUMATOLOGY

The Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University and London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre are seeking a clinician-teacher or clinician-researcher to join our thriving academic rheumatology program.

ABOUT THE DIVISION: The Division of Rheumatology currently has 9 members and is well-recognized and respected both nationally and internationally. The Division’s physicians provide comprehensive subspecialty care to a regional catchment area of more than two million people across Southwestern Ontario.

Our clinical programs include general rheumatology and dedicated subspecialty clinics in lupus, inflammatory myositis, systemic sclerosis, vasculitis, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthritis, early rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis. The Division also leads innovative initiatives in digital health, advancing precision care and data-driven clinical decision support in rheumatology.

The Division has a fully accredited Royal College Subspecialty Training Program in Rheumatology, providing outstanding training for postgraduate residents and clinical fellows. Faculty are actively involved in undergraduate and graduate education, interprofessional teaching, and mentorship, fostering the next generation of clinicians, educators, and scientists.

Research within the Division spans translational, clinical, educational, and health systems domains, with strong collaborations across Western’s Bone & Joint Institute, Lawson Health Research Institute, and national networks. Areas of excellence include a broad range of clinical epidemiology, clinical research including clinical trials, and biomedical research methodology in early rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis, vasculitis, systemic scleroisis, osteoarthritis, synovial biology, imaging and biomechanics, cardiovascular risks, the role of the microbiome, and more. The Division’s integrated academic and clinical programs exemplify Western’s commitment to advancing musculoskeletal health through discovery, education, and compassionate patient care.

ACADEMIC AND CLINICAL EXPECTATIONS: The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collegial academic practice in rheumatology that integrates clinical excellence with leadership in education, research, and innovation. The position is ideally suited for a clinician-teacher or clinician-researcher with demonstrated or emerging expertise in musculoskeletal and vasculitis ultrasound and/or in developing innovative models of vasculitis care.

Clinical responsibilities will include providing comprehensive ambulatory and inpatient consultative rheumatology care at St. Joseph’s Health Care London and London Health Sciences Centre, with participation in the Division’s shared call schedule. The successful candidate will contribute to specialized programs in systemic vasculitis and musculoskeletal ultrasound, supporting multidisciplinary and image-guided approaches to diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment optimization.

Teaching and educational leadership will form a central component of this role. The candidate will contribute to the Royal College–accredited Rheumatology Training Program, delivering hands-on and didactic instruction in musculoskeletal and vasculitis ultrasound, and advancing educational innovation in procedural and image-based training. Opportunities exist to lead or expand ultrasound curricula, develop simulation-based learning modules, and mentor trainees pursuing advanced competency in ultrasound-guided diagnostics and interventions.

Research and scholarship expectations will align with the candidate’s academic focus and may include clinical trials, applied imaging research, health services studies, or educational scholarship. The Division welcomes individuals interested in advancing knowledge in ultrasound imaging biomarkers, disease activity assessment in vasculitis, or novel models of integrated care for systemic vasculitis. Candidates with established or developing collaborations through the Bone & Joint Institute, Lawson Health Research Institute, or national vasculitis networks will be particularly well-positioned to succeed.

The Division encourages and supports participation in multidisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, and knowledge translation initiatives that enhance patient care and advance the Division’s academic mission. Protected academic time and mentorship will be provided to support the candidate’s scholarly development within the Department’s Clinician-Teacher or Clinician-Researcher career tracks.

Candidates considered at the rank of Associate Professor must have demonstrated regional or national expertise in their field, and those considered at the rank of Full Professor must be recognized as national or international leaders in their area of academic focus.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: Candidates must meet the following qualifications:

1.    Hold an MD, MBBS, or equivalent.

2.    Be certified (or eligible for certification) in Rheumatology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or possess equivalent training recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).

3.    Be licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice medicine in Ontario through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

4.    Be eligible for or hold a limited term academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, or a continuing academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

5.    Demonstrate clinical expertise in rheumatology, with a particular focus on one or more of the following areas:

a.    Musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic assessment, procedural guidance, and disease monitoring.

b.    Vasculitis care, including experience in clinical management, multidisciplinary models of care, and integration of advanced imaging or biomarker tools.

c.    Education and training in ultrasound, vasculitis, or advanced rheumatology techniques.

d.    Clinical or translational research in musculoskeletal imaging, vasculitis outcomes, or innovative models of care delivery.

6.    Show a track record or emerging potential for academic productivity, which may include publications, educational innovation, or research grants in rheumatology or related disciplines.

7.    Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in spoken and written English, and a commitment to collaboration in multidisciplinary and academic environments.

8.    Candidates with formal training or certification in musculoskeletal ultrasound, prior experience in educational program development, or research activity related to vasculitis imaging and care models will be given preference.

COMPENSATION DETAILS: Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be primarily composed of the following sources: Fee for service (OHIP billings), Alternative Funding Plan, academic salary, and specialty review funding.
