Job Description
Now Welcoming U.S. Trained Physicians
Guelph General Hospital (GGH) is actively seeking dedicated Anesthesiologists (full-time or part-time) to join our dynamic team of 12 specialists. We are pleased to announce that U.S. trained physicians who are Canadian citizens (or those eligible to work in Canada) and hold U.S. Board Certification are eligible to practice independently in Ontario without the need for additional training or supervision. This is made possible through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario's (CPSO) Alternative Pathways to Registration policy, which recognizes the equivalency of U.S. Board Certification. For more information, please visit: CPSO – Practising in Ontario: Information for U.S.-Trained Physicians.
About Guelph General Hospital
GGH is a 216-bed hospital with 24 bed closed ICU and stepdown units. Through providing daily coverage of 7-8 operating rooms, we offer a wide range of both adult and paediatric surgical services including designated busy regional vascular and bariatric programs. The department of Anesthesiology is well equipped with all modern pharmaceuticals and state-of-the art anesthesia equipment. Our call assignment usually averages 1:8, allowing a great work-life balance. The department also provides a dedicated on-call obstetrical anesthesia coverage on Monday to Friday basis, for which the on-call Anesthesiologist receives additional stipend from the hospital. Our department has recently integrated the role of Anesthesia Assistants to support many aspects of our services.
The Community
Guelph is a growing university community with over 145,000 residents and is centrally located in southwestern Ontario with easy access to several large urban centres including the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, London, and Kitchener-Waterloo. Guelph, also known as “The Royal City”, is consistently rated as one of Canada's best and safest places to live and to raise a family.
The Position
The Department of Anaesthesiology is currently seeking highly motivated Anesthesiologists (either full time or part time) to join a group of 12 Anesthesiologists, sharing all clinical duties including on call assignments, with a flexible start date. According to GGH bylaws, this position is designated as a locum 3 with promotion to an associate status after one year of probation. This position is an independent fee for service structure for OHIP billing plus the applicable on call stipends.
Academic Opportunities
This position also offers enormous teaching opportunities through an optional academic appointment at McMaster University Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.
Qualifications
- Candidates must be eligible for certificate of registration to practice anesthesiology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and have fellowship in Anaesthesiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC). The department may offer temporary supervision for eligible candidates, on a case-by-case basis, until those conditions are fulfilled.
- Canadian postgraduate 5th year residents (PGY5) are encouraged to apply provided that they will meet the conditions outlined above.
- License to practice Anesthesiology in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
- American Board-certified Anaesthesiologists who are eligible for registration via CPSO Pathway A.
- The department also offers abundant locum opportunities for Family practice anesthesiologists.
