Job Description

LIVE AND THRIVE: MEDICINE AND COMMUNITY IN KAMLOOPS, BC

Set amid sandstone canyons, rolling grasslands, and magnificent evergreen woods, Kamloops is a flourishing city of 100,000 with an energetic character set against a stunning natural setting.

With its name stemming from the Secwépemc Tk’emlúps, meaning “where the rivers meet,” Kamloops reflects the land’s geography where the Thompson rivers converge. The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc people have inhabited this region for millennia, nurturing a deep connection to their ancestral territory. Today, the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation continues their legacy, shaping Kamloops’ cultural landscape.

Known for our welcoming spirit, our city has earned its moniker as the Tournament Capital of Canada, offering big city amenities including excellent eateries, unique shops and exceptional recreation facilities. We take immense pride in our dynamic arts community, and annual events including the Kamloops Film Festival, Wildlights at the BC Wildlife Park, and Music in the Park.

With eight beautiful provincial parks and over 100 lakes nearby, our city offers fantastic opportunities for outdoor activities like fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking and camping. With mountain, parkland and desert fairways dotting the landscape here, we’re fast becoming Canada’s premier golf destination. Come winter, Sun Peaks Resort transforms into a mecca for skiers and snowboarders, just a quick 45-minute drive out of the city.

With 300 sun-filled days and the warmest people you’ll ever meet, Kamloops is the perfect spot to set down roots and live life with passion.

VISIONARY CARE: CRAFTING YOUR CLINICAL PATH

Shape the future of healthcare in Kamloops. As an adult psychiatrist at Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) and the Kamloops Mental Health and Substance Use (KMHSU) centre, your expertise and compassion will be essential in providing exceptional care to those in need.

In this vital role, you’ll be the voice for those too often left unheard, dedicating your passion to bridging the divides in healthcare access and quality. Integral to our team, you’re tasked with providing exceptional psychiatric care, reaching out to individuals battling complex and enduring mental health challenges. This includes shining a light of hope for those facing severe mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

As a psychiatrist at RIH and KMHSU, your unique strengths will be pivotal in a variety of areas. You’ll engage in comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, navigate the complexities of advanced pharmacological treatments, and offer essential psychosocial support. Educating patients and their support networks will be a key aspect of your work, illuminating the path to understanding and managing their conditions. You’ll advocate for a seamless integration of mental health care with overall wellness, employing a compassionate, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented methodology that underscores your commitment to each individual’s well-being.

The new Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower at RIH offers advanced child and adolescent mental health services, a specialized mental health and substance use inpatient unit, and a 30-bed general psychiatric unit. This includes 20 general beds, 10 high observation beds, and 3 seclusion beds.

Your dedication to educational excellence will shine as you mentor peers, medical undergraduates, postgraduate Family Practice residents, and participants in the UBC–Okanagan Psychiatry program. We’ll support and encourage you to embrace leadership roles and pursue professional development.

Here, you’re not just advancing patient care; you’re on a path to rewarding personal and professional growth. Each challenge you overcome and milestone you reach enriches not only your career but also your sense of personal achievement. Your dedication transcends professional responsibilities, impacting lives and strengthening community bonds.

AT THE HEART OF CARE: ROYAL INLAND HOSPITAL

Royal Inland Hospital (RIH), a 273-bed facility, serves as the primary referral centre for nearly 250,000 individuals within the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap Health Service Area. As the region’s leading tertiary referral hospital and Level 1 Trauma Centre, RIH expertly manages over 250 major trauma cases and accommodates 72,000 Emergency Department visits each year.

The Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower, a $417-million expansion opened in the summer of 2022, has propelled RIH into a new healthcare era, featuring advanced mental health units and surgical services. Upcoming enhancements include a new post-anesthetic recovery room by April 2024, a pediatric unit in June 2024, and a revamped emergency entrance by September 2024, with the full emergency department completion by autumn 2026. Further ambitious growth includes a $359-million cancer centre, set to enrich our cancer care services by 2028.

Our exceptional teams dedicate themselves to delivering comprehensive care across a broad spectrum of services, including internal medicine, OB/GYN, general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, ENT, pathology, psychiatry, pediatrics, anesthesia, radiology, urology, and family practice inpatient care. We leverage our expertise and innovative facilities to provide the highest standard of healthcare to our community.

SHAPE THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE: BEGIN YOUR LEGACY HERE

If you’re an empathetic and insightful psychiatrist, elevate your career at Royal Inland Hospital, where your expertise can change lives. Apply today to live, work and play where others only vacation! It’s better here!

Are you interested in practicing at RIH, but prefer part-time hours? We welcome your preference for balance and flexibility! We recognize the vital role of talented psychiatrists, even on a part-time basis.

STEP IN, STAND OUT: MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A LOCUM

Come for a locum and contribute to healthcare advancements that enhance your skills and patient care.
