Job Description

CARDIOLOGIST – DEVICE SPECIALIST (PACEMAKER FOCUS)

NIAGARA HEALTH

The Department of Medicine, Service of Cardiology at Niagara Health (NH) is inviting applications for a Device Cardiologist to join our dynamic and expanding cardiac program. We are seeking a passionate and forward-thinking physician with a commitment to exemplary patient care and specific expertise in pacemaker implantation and follow-up.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the advancement of our regional cardiac device program, serving the Niagara region in collaboration with tertiary electrophysiology centers.

Device Program Highlights:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to perform permanent pacemaker implants and participate in device clinics.
  • Dedicated OR time is secured every Monday and Thursday at the St. Catharines site, enabling timely access to procedures.
  • The program benefits from strong and active collaboration with the Hamilton Health Sciences EP team, facilitating efficient referral pathways for complex EP and ablation cases.
  • The device service is fully integrated into Niagara Health’s regional model, supporting multiple hospital sites and community care integration.
  • Opportunities to lead and grow the device program, optimize follow-up protocols, and contribute to regional planning are strongly supported.

Supporting Infrastructure:

In addition to a thriving device program, Niagara Health offers access to a broad array of cardiac diagnostics and interventional services, including:

  • Cardiac catheterization laboratory (on-site)
  • Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography
  • Exercise and pharmacologic stress testing
  • Nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging
  • Holter and event monitoring
  • Cardiac CT angiography
  • Cardiac MRI

The Team & Environment:

  • Join a collegial and tight-knit group of 12 cardiologists working across Niagara’s regional model.
  • Our team culture prioritizes mentorship, mutual respect, and professional development.
  • Overnight call is shared equitably (approx. 3 nights/month), with daytime rotations including cardiology consultation, Level 2 CCU, heart function clinic, stress testing, Holter interpretation, and echocardiography.
  • Physicians benefit from competitive compensation with no overhead.

Academic & Research Opportunities:

  • Niagara Health is a regional academic campus of McMaster University. Physicians are encouraged to seek faculty appointments through the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, with ample opportunity for teaching and supervising medical students and residents.
  • Active support is provided for involvement in clinical trials and investigator-initiated research, including device-focused projects and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Independent license (or eligibility) with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or American Board of Internal Medicine (Cardiology)
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Expertise in pacemaker implantation is required; additional device or EP skills (e.g., loop recorders, CRT optimization) considered an asset
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is not required but considered an asset

Tertiary Linkages:

  • Hamilton Health Sciences – 1 hour away, offering full EP and ablation support
  • St. Catharines Cath Lab – on-site, with regional access

About Niagara Health:

Niagara Health is a large regional healthcare provider with five hospital sites and a growing network of community and virtual services, serving a population of 450,000 across the Niagara region. We are proud to offer:

  • A full range of acute care services
  • Long-term care operations
  • Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada
  • A mission to deliver Extraordinary Caring. Every Person. Every Time.

Current group:

  • 12 Cardiologists

Call:

  • Overnight call approximately 3 nights per month

The Practice:

  • Hospital rotations include daytime cardiology consultation service, Level 2 CCU, stress testing, heart function clinic, holter monitor interpretation and echo coverage
  • Competitive compensation with no overhead

Academic Affiliations:

Since its founding in 1966, innovation has been the hallmark of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a major contributor to its international reputation for excellence.

The medical school has expanded to a regional campus in Niagara, which is located at Brock University. Students at the Niagara Regional Campus complete their clinical rotations in one of the six area hospitals with teaching done by the highly skilled and motivated hospital physicians.

Opportunities for strengthening and building strong academic partnerships are a priority for the NHS as the hospital has expanded into this new facility. We are interested in Physicians who will pursue a university faculty appointment and participate in academic activities within a strong regional community hospital setting. Research opportunities abound at Niagara Health and all new members will be onboarded to support our current research efforts. In addition, opportunities to lead research projects locally will be supported by the hospital and division.

In addition to McMaster, the Niagara Health System is building strong ties with other regional academic providers such as Brock University and Niagara College.

Tertiary Care:

  • Hamilton Health Sciences 1 hour away
  • Satellite Cath lab located at St. Catharine’s General Hospital.

Qualifications Required:

  • Independent license with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • FRCP(C) in Cardiology or American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiology
  • Eligible to work in Canada without restrictions
