Job Description

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
Leaders in Patient Safety, Diversity, Inclusion & Value Based Care
Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist - NSLP Locums
The Department of Psychiatry at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is currently seeking qualified individuals to provide locum coverage throughout 2023.
Our Hospital is the Schedule 1 facility for the district of Thunder Bay. We operate a 30 bed Acute Mental Health Care Inpatient Unit, with 6 Psychiatric Intensive Care Beds, a 20 bed Forensic Psychiatry Unit, an 8 bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) ambulatory mental health team, and short-term bridging ambulatory mental health care. We provide Consultation Liaison mental health service throughout the Hospital and are developing a new Mental Health Emergency Service and Stabilization Unit to better meet the needs of our busy Emergency Department.
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit is designed to meet the needs of youth with mental health issues that require emergency care. The Unit provides a safe and therapeutic environment for youth, offering an assessment, stabilization, and brief treatment. Admissions to the unit are through the Emergency Department at the Health Sciences Centre or a regional hospital for those living outside of Thunder Bay.
Inpatient services are delivered by a multi-discipline team which includes physicians, psychological associates, social workers, nurses, and child and youth workers. This team works with youth to help stabilize behaviours, and improve coping and problem solving skills. An important part of the process is developing a safety plan which all youth complete, sharing the information with parents. Admissions are typically three to five days in length.
Applicants must be eligible for independent licensing through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), and must have completed a recognized Psychiatry residency, with FRCSC certification (or equivalent). Subspecialty training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry is required.
Our hospital is a 395 funded bed acute care facility which provides coverage to a regional population base of 250,000 people. Delivering all services daily including acting as the Regional Trauma Centre and Cancer Referral Centre for the Northwestern Ontario region with plans to include Cardiac Surgery by 2026.
Our locums are supported through the Ministry's, Northern Specialist Locum Program (Respite Tenens). This program offers reimbursement of flights and accommodations.
