Position Description:
The Department of Pediatrics (DoP) invite applicants to apply for the Deputy Section Chief – Co-Clinical Lead position in the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
This is a 0.18 FTE position that is shared with another Co-Clinical Lead. The desired start date is May 1, 2026.
This role is currently shared between two physicians; recruitment is for one of those positions. This role is responsible for ensuring the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) ED is providing the highest quality of care to its patients and families, supporting the clinical excellence and wellness of the 60 PEM physicians that work at ACH and South Health Campus (SHC), maintaining relationships and excellent patient care between the ACH ED and all other ACH departments, and coordinating pediatric care with the other EDs, and primary care providers, in the Calgary Zone. The specific role of the clinical lead is to support the pillar of clinical care, in a large section that provides direct patient care to over 90,000 patients per year at two sites (ACH and SHC) and provides pediatric expertise across Southern Alberta.
The clinical lead represents the clinical perspective of the ED physicians when there are system and process changes that affect the ACH ED. This role is a member of the several ACH PEM committees, examples include resource, scheduling, quality, etc., is involved in staff search and selection, organizes departmental team building/social gatherings. The clinical lead also represents the clinical perspective of the ED physicians when there are system and process changes that affect the ACH ED. The clinical lead covers a quarter of the ACH ED admin on-call days which includes finding sick-call coverage at the ACH and at SHC (12 hours a day), problem-solving urgent patient flow and patient care challenges, and responding to code oranges/disasters. This role is involved in site-wide initiatives. They are also available to meet ad hoc for a variety of issues that come up between the ACH ED and other departments.
The Clinical Co-leads review patient concerns from the AHS Patient Concerns department (average 4/month) related to physician care in the ED and responds accordingly. These reviews are shared with the ACH ED Physician Safety Lead and include reviewing the case, speaking with the physician(s) and care team involved, communicating with the family and providing a written summary for the Patient Concerns department.
