- The goal of the mentorship program is to help you reach that level of confidence safely and efficiently.
- During the mentorship period, you will be seeing patients independently and will be scheduled alongside experienced emergency physicians who are available for support, discussion, and teaching as needed. You will have your own patient assignments and autonomy.
Department Summary:
- Approximately 60,000 ED visits annually (140–150 patients/day). As a general benchmark, we typically aim for physicians to see approximately 20 to 24 patients during a 9-hour shift. This can vary depending on patient acuity, departmental flow, procedures, and the complexity of cases encountered.
- 6-physician schedule, working toward 7 physician shifts/day
- Waterfall-style scheduling with staggered starts throughout the day (e.g., 0700, 0930, etc.)
- Physicians begin in the highest-acuity areas and generally finish in minor treatment areas
- EMR: Cerner (FirstNet) and paper based. Meditech will be introduced in Fall 2027.
- Final hour of each shift is typically dedicated to cleaning up existing patients rather than picking up new ones
- About 28 physicians currently rotate through the department, the majority being family physicians with EM-focused practices
- Junior physicians are not scheduled for solo overnight coverage
- Acute care area with 12 beds, 4-bed resuscitation area, and 12-bed minor treatment area
- Emergency physicians perform admissions and Internal Medicine consults, with Hospitalists assuming MRP responsibilities
- Respiratory Therapists are available 24/7 and perform the majority of ED intubations
- On-call physicians are ideally located within a 20–25-minute radius, with sleeping rooms available on site
