Job Description

Alberta Health Services in partnership with the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, invites applications for a clinical community-based Gastroenterologist at the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert, AB, and Leduc Community Hospital in Leduc, AB. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026 however can be altered to accommodate the successful applicant.

 

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff.

 

The city of St. Albert is located directly adjacent and northwest to Edmonton, approximately 30 minutes from the Edmonton city-centre. The town of Leduc is located south of Edmonton, approximately 30 minutes from the Edmonton city-centre.

 

The Division of Gastroenterology currently has 3 MD members at the Sturgeon Community Hospital. The Division of Gastroenterology, University of Alberta, is one of the largest gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, motility, and nutrition centers in Canada. US News & World Report in their 2022 Best Universities Report ranked Gastroenterology and Hepatology No. 2 in Canada and No. 28 in the world. It manages leading-edge clinical, basic and translational research programs involving 45 graduate and undergraduate students; over 3 million dollars in basic and clinical research funding annually and has developed the Centres of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) and Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Research (GILDR).

 

The Sturgeon Community Hospital has 167 beds with General Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, ICU, CCU, and ER services. The Division of Gastroenterology at the Sturgeon Community Hospital currently has 3 Gastroenterologists and 1 Hepatologist.

 

The Leduc Community Hospital endoscopy unit currently serves as a community endoscopy site providing elective outpatient endoscopy services.

 

About the Position:

The successful candidate will have approximately 2 full days of elective endoscopy per week based at the Leduc Community Hospital in Leduc, AB, which includes days of SCOPE program colonoscopy screening (excluding holidays, service weeks and conference leave). Service/on-weeks will be 1 in 4 and based out of the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert. This is a consulting-only service with urgent/emergent endoscopy access. During service weeks, the successful applicant’s elective endoscopy will be shifted to the Sturgeon Community Hospital to assist with on call-coverage.

 

Key accountabilities of the clinical Gastroenterologist will include participation in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology healthcare including but not limited to, city-wide night-, weekend- and holiday- call, and administrative tasks.

 

The successful applicant will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment in the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with Gastroenterology training from a recognized training center, and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
