Opportunity Mental Health Program – Seeking a General Outpatient Psychiatrist
Full-time Permanent Faculty Position
The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) Mental Health program is a Schedule 1 Facility under the Mental Health Act, which operates the following general psychiatry acute care programs and services at two campuses (Civic and General):
- Psychiatric Emergency Services
- Inpatient Service
- Outpatient Clinics (including Urgent Consult Clinic)
- Acute Partial Hospitalization
- Consultation Programs & Medical/Surgical Liaison Service
The Ottawa Hospital also provides specialized programs and/or services:
- Mobile Crisis Team & Community Crisis Stabilization Beds
- First Episode Psychosis Program (regional program)
- Perinatal Mental Health Services
- Regional Program for the Treatment of Eating Disorder
- Substance Use Program
- Community Treatment Order Coordinator
Job duties:
- Provide specialized psychiatric care to outpatient mental health program.
- Consults with other health care providers to devise a plan to manage other health issues or medications that may be impacting the patient’s mental status.
- Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of medications.
- Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
- Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
- Discuss progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications; and supervising staff provision of services.
- Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
Required Education, Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
- Language requirements: fluent in English, bilingualism considered an asset.
- Holding a PhD considered an asset.
- Experience in psychotherapy in a clinical setting with willingness to perform evidence-based group psychotherapy (experience in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy preferred)
- Expertise in and commitment to treatment of patients in an outpatient general psychiatry academic setting.
- Eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
- Meet criteria to apply for and receive appropriate medical staff privileges at The Ottawa Hospital.
- Meet criteria and receive an academic appointment at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine at the rank of Lecturer or higher.
- Theoretical knowledge of general medical care, and ability to apply this knowledge in a clinical setting and refer where needed.
- Demonstrated skill in assessing patient needs.
- Demonstrated skill in participating as an active member of the health care team.
- Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health discipline.
- Maintains extensive knowledge in psychopharmacology.
- Identifies a commitment to personal continuing education activities.
Approximate wage range: $250,000 – $400,000
Benefits: Successful applicants will work in a hospital privileges model. Remuneration is fee for service with alternate funding plan for academic work.
