PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) is a large, urban, full service community teaching hospital with affiliation with the University of Toronto. In a vibrant and upcoming location, MGH provides comprehensive care to a diverse population of 400,000 living in the east end of Toronto since 1929.
The Division of Oncology/Hematology at MGH consists of 3 Medical Oncologists, 2 Malignant Hematologists and 1 Benign Hematologist. We are a collegial team with a busy clinical practice working in close partnership with Sunnybrook as part of the Toronto Central North Regional Cancer Program.
We aim to deliver services and programs for patients and families living in the East York region, providing a range of oncology services including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up within the modalities of medical oncology and malignant hematology (as well as palliative care and end of life care).
POSITION OVERVIEW:
As an important member of the MGH Oncology/Hematology team, the Clinical Associate – General Practitioner in Oncology (GPO) provides direct patient care to patients and families admitted to the inpatient Oncology/Hematology service in collaboration with Oncologists and other team members.
Primary responsibility will be the oncology inpatient population and to directly manage inpatients admitted to the Oncology/Hematology service, from initial contact to completion of discharge summary, paperwork/notes and referrals for outpatient services.
The in-patient service consists of admitted patients with a variety of oncologic needs including active chemotherapy complications as well as symptom management. The GPO will assist with optimizing bed flow and facilitate efficient patient discharge.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct initial comprehensive assessments and consultations for admitted in-patients with appropriate Oncology/Malignant Hematology supervision/ back-up available.
- Assume the MRP role for all admitted Oncology/Hematology inpatients.
- Review patient history, diagnosis, and test results; organize relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (i.e. paracentesis, thoracentesis, bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures). Prescribe medications, therapies and supportive care tailored for individual patient needs.
- Be the point of contact and resource for in-patient inter-professional teams regarding goals of care and discharge planning for admitted Oncology/Hematology in-patients.
- Collaborate closely with healthcare professionals, including physicians (oncologists, surgeons and other specialties), nurses, PT/OT/Dietitian, Transition Navigator and other team members to ensure seamless coordination in the delivery of comprehensive oncology services.
- Liaise with other MGH specialties to obtain consultation and support for in-patients when required.
- Engage with outside hospital specialties such as Radiation Oncology and Acute leukemia services etc to ensure appropriate care of shared patients.
- Under the supervision of an Oncologist/Malignant Hematologist, implement treatment plans and appropriate follow up to ensure smooth transitions for patients requiring systemic therapy in the Outpatient oncology clinic.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. Documenting treatment plans, progress notes, and other pertinent information in the patient’s electronic health records.
- Promote a patient–centered model of care and participate in interdisciplinary rounds, educational events, multidisciplinary case conferences as well as patient/family conferences where appropriate.
- Provide educational support to the inter-professional team on the unit.
Professional Development Accountability:

- Adhere to policies and procedures in the provision of care of cancer patients as outlined by Cancer Care Ontario and Toronto Central Regional Cancer Program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Member in good standing with the Royal College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and/or General Internal Medicine with the Royal College Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.
- Licensed to practice medicine in Ontario, a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) with a valid OHIP billing number.
- Eligible for appointment to Michael Garron Hospital Medical staff.
- Experience in an acute care hospital with experience in cancer care will be given strong preference.
- Demonstrate clinical excellence with interest/knowledge in clinical, administrative, and system-wide issues with respect to cancer care.
- Demonstrate interest in working with cancer patients and families with commitment to ensure effective and compassionate delivery of patient focus care.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrate a strong professional presence with ability to maintain positive relationships with other health care team professionals and able to contribute to the development of an environment conducive to excellent patient care.
- Responsible and energetic individual with ability to prioritize and organize activity in a busy environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships with clinical and administrative stakeholders.
