General Surgeon


Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario is recruiting a full-time General Surgeon. The successful candidate will be entitled to operating room and endoscopy time contingent on wait times. Call coverage will be shared among a group of six general surgeons.

Candidates must possess an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Ontario with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and must hold or be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Subspecialty training in minimally invasive surgery and/or colorectal surgery would be valued but is not required. There is flexibility with the starting date.

Affiliation with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) provides the opportunity to teach residents and medical students. Faculty appointments are encouraged. Research is supported by the Sault Ste. Marie Academic Medical Association (SSM AMA).

This position is eligible for the Ontario Ministry of Health incentive offered through the Northern Rural Recruitment & Retention Initiative as well as a community relocation allowance. It may also be eligible for the Northern Specialist Alternative Funding Plan (NSAPP).

Sault Ste. Marie is located on the St. Mary’s River between Lake Huron and Lake Superior on the U.S. /Canadian border. The Sault has all the amenities of a regional urban centre, with both the Canadian wilderness and extraordinary vacation areas in Michigan just minutes away. There is a strong cultural and arts basis in the community, and both winter and summer outdoor activities abound. The Sault has an excellent school system and offers a multitude of sports and artistic opportunities for children and adults alike. Sault Ste. Marie is served by three Canadian airlines as well as one major U.S. airline.

Sault Area Hospital (SAH) has approximately 2700 dedicated staff, physicians and volunteers who work together to deliver outstanding care and services to a catchment population of approximately 115,000. With an approved complement of nearly 300 beds in spectacular new facilities, SAH provides primary, secondary and select tertiary services to residents in Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma. In addition to providing core services in Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine; Surgery; Obstetrics, Maternity & Paediatrics; Mental Health and Addictions; Complex Continuing Care; and Rehabilitation, SAH is also home to the Algoma Regional Renal Program and the Algoma District Cancer Program.

The Group Health Centre (GHC) is a progressive, multi-specialty, ambulatory care health organization and is one of Canada's first consumer-sponsored health care facilities built with private funds donated by local union members. As Ontario's largest and longest established alternatively funded healthcare organization, the GHC serves over 60,000 Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District residents.

The surgical program performs 6000 surgeries per year and supports 6 operating rooms daily. Surgical services include General, Vascular, Orthopedic, OB/Gyn, ENT, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology and Dental.
