Job Description

Description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology, at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for an Epilepsy Clinician to help support the Ottawa Hospital Adult Epilepsy Program (ottawaepilepsyprogram.ca) for a 1-year locum position.

The Division of Neurology is renowned for the delivery of outstanding care and is recognized internationally for its programs, including neuromuscular, MS, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy, and stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting-edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology. In addition to modern outpatient clinical units, the Division has a 4 bed EMU, 20 bed inpatient general neurology unit, 15 bed stroke inpatient unit, and consult services at both campuses of The Ottawa Hospital.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive department supporting a large and diverse academic community. Our members are leaders in advancing clinical care, research excellence, and academic excellence.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.

Responsibilities

The EEG laboratory has 4 cEEG machines used primarily in critical care, 4 routine video EEG machines and the ability to perform ambulatory home video EEG monitoring for outpatients. The program includes outpatient clinics in general epilepsy as well as specialized care in the First Seizure Clinic, Women with Epilepsy and a Transitional Clinic for pediatric patients graduating from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

The individual will assist in coverage of clinical outpatient epilepsy activities including; 1) evaluation and management of epilepsy patients in subspecialty clinics such as first seizure clinics and general epilepsy clinics. The proficiency for weekday routine EEG coverage, is also desired.
