Job Description

Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites independently licensed physicians to join the newly established MRP Surgical Hospitalist Service – Orthopedics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, one of Edmonton’s premier tertiary care centres.

This innovative service is designed to support post‑operative orthopedic patients who require ongoing medical optimization and recovery beyond the initial 48–72 hours following surgery. As an MRP Surgical Hospitalist, you will serve as the Most Responsible Physician (MRP) for patients transferred to the service, providing continuity of care during a critical phase of convalescence.

About the Role

Physicians in this role enjoy a highly collaborative practice environment, working closely with orthopedic surgeons and designated surgical delegates to ensure seamless transitions of care and timely management of any evolving surgical or medical issues. This model allows you to focus on inpatient medical management while maintaining strong professional partnerships with surgical colleagues.

This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a redesign from the ground up. Physicians recruited now will play a key role in shaping the MRP Surgical Hospitalist model. You will be able to directly influence workflows, culture, and patient‑care innovations within one of Alberta’s busiest urban hospitals.

If you are seeking a rewarding hospital‑based practice that values collaboration, clinical impact, and professional autonomy, the MRP Surgical Hospitalist Service – Orthopedics offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference in patient care

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the RAH Surgical Hospitalist Physician Lead, the Hospital Medical Director, and the relevant Corridor Clinical Department Lead.

Service Model and Schedule

        Rotation structure: 1-week service blocks

        On-site hours: 0700–1700 daily

        Patient transfers occur between 0700–1700

Call structure: Second call from 1700–0700, with first call managed by in-house associate physicians

        Patient census: Approximately 20–25 patients

Team support includes ward-anchored associate physicians and dedicated pharmacy support

As the service continues to mature, there is opportunity for expansion to include Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants, contingent on service needs and resource availability.  The above service model and schedule is subject to change as the service evolves.

Why Join Us

  • Be part of cutting‑edge changes in orthopedic service delivery
  • Flexible, predictable scheduling aligned with your availability
  • Take on meaningful responsibility as a key medical provider for surgical patients
  • Influence clinical workflow, patient care efficiency, and the success of the MRP model
  • Join at a pivotal moment—and help define a service that will grow for years to come
  • Highly competitive remuneration in either a Fee-For-Service or Alternate Relationship Plan arrangement, including attractive incentives applicable to after-hours coverage

To apply, please forward a copy of your curriculum vitae and a letter of interest as well as the names of 3 references online through the doctorjobsalberta.com posting

Applications meeting the requirements outlined in this notice will be forwarded to the Search and Select Committee and will begin being reviewed immediately. We thank all applicants for their interest; only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted. The competition will remain open until the positions are filled.
