Job Description

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Regina Area and the Provincial Department of Pediatrics invite applications for the position of Pediatric Clinical Assistant to join our dynamic and growing pediatric team.The Pediatric Clinical Assistant Program is designed for physicians with pediatric training who do not qualify for independent registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS) but who wish to contribute to the delivery of high-quality pediatric care under a structured supervision model.Clinical Assistants will work collaboratively with Pediatricians and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide comprehensive care to infants, children, and adolescents on the in-patient Pediatric Teaching Unit (PTU), which has up to 26 beds including 4 high acuity beds and provides care for approximately 2,600 children per year.  It has been awarded the “Most Learner Friendly Unit” several years in a row, by the Regina College of Medicine! Regina’s Pediatric Department includes a diverse blend of Pediatricians, a Developmental Pediatrician, a Nephrologist, a Respirologist and a Clinical Immunologist & Allergist.  We also have 2 Pediatric Emergency Physicians and 2 Pediatric Surgeons.Under the supervision of the Most Responsible Physician (MRP), the successful candidate will participate in the assessment, management, and ongoing care of pediatric patients.Clinical responsibilities may include:
  • Providing supervised care in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
  • Assessing and assisting in the management of acute and chronic pediatric conditions
  • Participating in the development and implementation of patient management plans
  • Performing procedures within the approved scope of practice under supervision
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team
  • Maintaining accurate and timely electronic medical records
  • Promoting child health, disease prevention, and health advocacy
  • Participating in quality improvement, patient safety, and educational initiatives
  • Adhering to Department of Pediatrics, Saskatchewan Health Authority, and CPSS policies and standards
  • Duty schedules will be determined by the local site in consultation with the Area Department Lead and may include daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, and statutory holiday coverage.The Pediatric Clinical Assistant Program includes a structured assessment and professional development framework with regular feedback, direct observation, competency-based evaluations, and mentorship. The program is intended to support excellence in supervised pediatric practice and is not a pathway to Royal College certification.

    Qualifications:

    Required Qualifications: The successful applicant will:
  • Possess a medical degree from a university recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) or FAIMER directories
  • Applicants who have successfully completed an international Pediatrics residency program will be prioritized, however applicants with a special interest in pediatrics may be considered
  • Meet eligibility requirements for licensure as a Clinical Assistant with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan
  • Successfully complete the MCCQE Part I or an equivalent examination accepted by CPSS
  • Demonstrate proficiency in pediatric history taking and physical examination
  • Hold current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, professionalism, and teamwork skills
  • Be able to function effectively in a high-volume clinical environment with a commitment to high-quality, family-centered pediatric care
  •  Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recent clinical experience in hospital-based pediatric practice
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Additional pediatric procedural skills or relevant certifications
  • Experience participating in quality improvement, teaching, or research activities
  •  In accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. The start date for this position is negotiable. Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.
