What we do

BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre (BCW) is the only facility in British Columbia devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns and families. It provides a broad range of specialized women’s health services that address the health needs of women of all ages and backgrounds. BC Women’s is one of the largest maternity facilities in Canada, with over 7,000 births a year, and is both the major primary and secondary maternity services provider in the Lower Mainland and the cornerstone of the provincial tertiary care system. As an academic health centre BCW’s mandate includes providing strong leadership in research and the education and professional development of health care professionals in areas related to the health of the populations we serve.

BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) cares for the most acutely ill or injured children and youth. BCCH also provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC and operates a wide number of specialized health programs provided through a number of health services provider groups. As the main pediatrics clinical training site for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), BCCH is the leading acute care teaching facility in the province and conducts research to advance health and knowledge through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, and collaborations with other institutions.

BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre (BCW) and BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) are programs of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) which plans, manages and evaluates specialized health services with the BC health authorities to provide equitable and cost-effective health care for people throughout the province. Our values reflect our commitment to excellence and include: Respect people – Be compassionate – Dare to innovate – Create equity – Be courageous.

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and UBC Hospital (UBCH) are part of Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCH). VCH is guided by its values – we care for everyone, we are always learning, we strive for better results. UBC Hospital is the site for most of the elective major general gynecology surgery, while VGH is the site for emergency and ambulatory gynecology services, including the Rapid Access Gynecology Clinic. VGH offers specialized health-care services to residents in Vancouver and across the province through regional programs. As provincial hubs of excellence in learning and research, VGH and UBCH work closely with UBC and with the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

University of British Columbia (UBC) is Canada’s third largest university and consistently ranks among the 40 best universities in the world. Primarily situated in Vancouver, UBC is a research-intensive university and has an economic impact of $4 billion to the provincial economy.
