Job Description
The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (The Royal) is one of Canada’s foremost mental health care, teaching, and research hospitals. As a specialized academic health sciences centre, The Royal is committed to helping people living with mental illness and addiction into recovery faster. With over 500 beds and 19,000 outpatients served annually, The Royal delivers innovative, evidence-informed care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings including forensic psychiatry, geriatric mental health, operational stress injuries, schizophrenia, mood disorders and substance use disorders. Its campuses span Ottawa and Brockville, with strong partnerships across the region and province.
The Position
Provide clinical care across one or more interventional modalities; electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and/or esketamine/ketamine therapy, while contributing to research, teaching, and supervision within an academic environment affiliated with the University of Ottawa.
Key Accountabilities:
Clinical Care
· Provide direct patient care within the Interventional Psychiatry Division, including assessment, treatment planning, and delivery of care across ECT, rTMS, and/or esketamine/ketamine services.
· Participate in on-call and coverage responsibilities for interventional psychiatry services, as required.
Research
· Collaborate with researchers affiliated with the Department and the University of Ottawa on ongoing and future research initiatives related to interventional psychiatry.
· Contribute to the design, conduct, and dissemination of research where opportunities arise; prior research experience or expertise is considered an asset but is not a requirement.
· Engage in the ongoing development of an academic career, including scholarly productivity and progression through the University of Ottawa's academic promotion process.
Teaching and Supervision
· Supervise and provide clinical teaching to medical students and psychiatry residents rotating through interventional psychiatry services.
· Participate as a teaching faculty member within the Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship, including direct clinical supervision and didactic teaching of fellows.
Team and Division Participation
· Attend and participate in monthly lunch-and-learn sessions with the full Interventional Psychiatry team.
· Attend clinical meetings for the relevant service(s) to which you are assigned.
· Participate in multidisciplinary rounds for each relevant service.
The Candidate
· Eligible for an independent (or equivalent) licence to practise medicine in the province of Ontario,
· Certification (or eligibility for certification) as a specialist in Psychiatry with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
· Demonstrated expertise and clinical experience in at least one of the following interventional modalities:
o Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Ketamine/esketamine
· Experience or expertise in more than one interventional modality is preferred and will be considered a strong asset in the selection process.
· Eligible for an academic appointment with the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.
· Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), maintained throughout employment.
· Commitment to maintaining competence through ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in areas relevant to Interventional Psychiatry.
· Experience and/or expertise in more than one interventional modality (ECT, rTMS, esketamine/ketamine) is an asset.
· Prior experience in clinical or translational research, including publication history and/or involvement in grant-funded studies is an asset.
· Prior experience supervising trainees or teaching in an academic medical setting is an asset.
