Job Description
Unity Health Toronto, St Joseph’s Health Centre site in Toronto is inviting applications for a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist for a full-time active staff position in the Division of Ophthalmology. Sub-specialty training in glaucoma and complex anterior segment surgery will be considered an asset. St. Joseph’s is a fully accredited community teaching hospital within the Unity Health Toronto network, serving Toronto’s west-end.
St. Joseph’s provides care to a culturally and economically diverse population of about 530,000. Our hospital is a 400-bed facility that employs approximately 2,500 staff, along with 400 credentialed staff physicians. The Division of Ophthalmology at St. Joseph’s Health Centre is affiliated with the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. The ideal candidate will have an interest in education, clinical research, leadership, and/or quality improvement. The successful candidate will join a team of 8 other ophthalmologists, will be expected to conduct weekly clinics in the Eye Centre at St. Joseph’s Health Centre and will have access to the Eye Centre (or other location) for glaucoma procedures, cataract surgery, and the main Operating Room for complex glaucoma and anterior segment cases. Weekly clinics will consist of comprehensive ophthalmology, glaucoma, and emergency and inpatients. The candidate will participate in the ophthalmology on-call schedule and will have a commitment to the outpatient clinic (for emergency patients and inpatients).
The candidate must possess exemplary clinical skills and professionalism, with evidence of excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. The candidate will be required to support the Division of Ophthalmology with teaching commitments and will regularly be involved in the teaching of medical students and residents. The successful candidate must be proficient in English and be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor. Certification in Ophthalmology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is a requirement. Candidates must have Canadian Medical Protective Association coverage or equivalent in good standing.
The anticipated start date is January 5, 2026, or as mutually agreed upon.
