The Wawa Medical Group/ Family Health Team is a collaborative group of Physicians and Allied Health Professionals (NPs, RNs, PT, CDE, RD)  providing primary health care to the patients of Wawa and outlying communities of Dubreuilville, Hawk Junction, Michipicoten First Nation, Missinabie and White River.  The FHT clinic is conveniently located within the Lady Dunn Health Centre.  Client services include geriatric care, smoking cessation, OST, hypertension program, foot care,  etc.  In house cardiac stress testing and endoscopy program.  ATLS and ACLS required for ED coverage.  Well stocked ED with POCUS, CMAC and glidescope, VCC unit, OH ED Peer to Peer member, Physician ER backup. 

As we are currently filling in for a vacant position, we have availability and flexibility.  If you would like to try Wawa, but our dates don't fit your schedule, send us an email and we can work it out.

The locum will provide primary care to our local patients as well as emergency coverage for Lady Dunn Health Centre.

Practice Hours:                     8:30 – 4:30 clinic hours (patient appointments 10am-12, 1-4pm)

Patient Volume:                   Clinic: approximately 15 patients per day

                                             Emerge: approximately 17 visits per 24 hr (with NP assist)

Travel Allowance:                Travel costs reimbursed through HFO. Travel stipend $1270 return for travel >4 hrs, stay >4days.

Accommodation Provided:  Fully furnished locum apartments / houses  (onsite and offsite). Costs reimbursed through HFO

Call Arrangements:              Call shifts are 7am -7am.

Compensation Details:   FM Clinic approx $1143; 24 hr ED call approx $4250; ATLS ACLS reqd. 

Teaching Opportunity:   The Wawa Medical Group frequently hosts medical students and residents from NOSM and other medical schools.

Wawa is located on the Trans-Canada Highway, a short 2.5-hour drive from Sault Ste. Marie ON, the closest commercial airport.  Make the scenic drive along the Lake Superior Circle Route / Group of Seven Route following the Lake Superior shoreline to the Land of the Big Goose.  

For the outdoor enthusiast we are minutes away from Lake Superior Provincial Park and close to the Chapleau Game Preserve.

You can enjoy the serene crystal clear waters of Lake Superior while you kayak, stand up paddle board, canoe, or just take it in from one of the many tranquil sand beaches that dot the shoreline.

There are walks and hikes for every fitness level, routes for road or gravel cycling,  or perhaps you would rather venture off the beaten path for berry picking or fishing.  You can enjoy Wawa like the locals do: the emerging bouldering scene, kicking up the trails a notch with a mountain bike or tubing down the river.  The Wawa Lake beachfront is a great spot for families, hosting the GooseNest market, playground equipment, and is often a venue for music and entertainment.

We are a winter-wonderland from December to March, with opportunities for cross country skiing, snow-shoeing, snowmobiling, toboganning, ice-fishing, ice-climbing, skating, pick-up hockey and curling.  It is also a great time to sit inside and enjoy a good book or movie. 

We have a diverse food scene from Trinidadian-Chinese fusion to Indian cuisine, with 6 restaurants and 3 fastfood outlets in town.  Our business district includes an Independent Grocer, 2 pharmacies, Canadian Tire, Home building centre, Red Apple department store, LCBO and Beer store, and outfitters for your fishing/outdoor needs, etc.  While locuming in Wawa you will have access to our municipal fitness centre with sauna, weights and cardio equipment.
