Academic Adult Critical Care Specialist, McMaster University 

Hamilton Health Sciences, Hamilton General Hospital, Neuro-Trauma ICU (Clinician-Educator) 


McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences are inviting applications for the position of Adult Staff Intensivist within the Department of Medicine. This is a geographic, full-time position as a Clinician-Educator.  

Position: 

Academic Intensivist. Full-time active staff appointment in the Neuro-Trauma ICU (NTICU) at Hamilton General Hospital (HGH), Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University. The effective date of this appointment is January 1, 2027. The start date is negotiable. 

Applicant Qualifications: 

Applicants must have a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine with certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent training and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Formal training in Neurocritical or Trauma Intensive Care is preferred. Those with significant experience with this patient population may also be considered. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.  

 This is a Clinician-Educator track University appointment. Ideally, the applicant will have or be completing graduate studies in medical education or patient safety/quality improvement. Responsibilities include full-time equivalent clinical intensive care practice as well as commitments to education, administration, and research as required by all Staff Physicians in the Department of Critical Care Medicine. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research or other scholarly work is required. Clinical expertise in managing critically ill neurologic, trauma and burns patients is mandatory. The successful candidate would be expected to supervise and teach learners from the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and fellowship programs at McMaster University. 

Candidacy for this position will be assessed by applicant’s postgraduate training, grant and publication history, awards, teaching evaluations and program development and leadership activities. The successful candidate will lead the inter-professional critical care team during clinical weeks as attending ICU physician at HGH and other Critical Care services at Hamilton Health Sciences. In addition, the candidate will develop an academic body of work aligned with their job description, the Critical Care Residency Program, and the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. The successful candidate must also have strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive within a collaborative and interdisciplinary program involving multiple specialties and consultative services. 

Hospital Description: 

Hamilton Health Sciences is one of the largest hospital systems in Ontario and provides regional medical care to over 2 million people in southern Ontario. Hamilton Health Sciences is an academic hospital organization affiliated with McMaster University and ranked in the top 10 of Canada’s research hospitals. The Department of Critical Care at Hamilton Health Sciences supports 6 Intensive Care Units across various sites in Hamilton, including Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre and McMaster University Medical Centre. The Hamilton General Hospital Campus includes the Population Health Research Institute and the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute. 

 Intensive Care Unit Description: 

Across all sites, the physician group consists of 24 ICU Physicians who are responsible for the comprehensive care for all patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. HGH NTICU is a 15-bed ICU at HGH that provides critical care to patients from Neurosurgery, Neurology, Stroke, Trauma, Spine and Burns.  

 The position will consist of approximately 13-weeks of total clinical work within critical care annually and will include responsibilities within the ICU as well as on the Critical Care Response Team. Neurosciences Stepdown Unit clinical time is also a possibility. The successful applicant may provide coverage at McMaster University Medical Centre in the Women’s Reproductive Health ICU, similar other members of the Department.  

Remuneration and Academic Standing: 

Academic rank, salary and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. For the successful candidate remuneration will be competitive with the usual income range for an academic intensivist in the province of Ontario.
