Job Description

Academic Critical Care Physician

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Queen’s University

The Department of Critical Care Medicine is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Adult Critical Care Medicine Specialist. Preference will be given to those who either hold or are eligible for certification in Adult Critical Care Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Applicants must also possess expertise, training, and experience in respective base specialties of Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Surgery or Neurology. While this post is for Critical Care Medicine positions, shared positions may be explored for individuals who wish to maintain an active practice in their base specialties.

Operating at the Kingston General Hospital site of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre in a medical/surgical ICU with forty-two level 3 adult critical care beds and a total of eighty-seven level 2/3 ICU beds, the Critical Care Medicine service provides tertiary critical care services for the Southeastern Ontario referral region. There is a fully accredited Royal College Critical Care Medicine training program and a highly productive research program.

Preference will be given to applicants with a commitment to academic medicine. The successful incumbent will be expected to contribute to the education, scholarly, administration and research missions of the department. The successful candidate will have significant clinical responsibilities and will be expected to demonstrate exemplary clinical service. The successful candidate must also demonstrate strong potential for teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as exhibit a strong potential for innovative scholarly contributions (in research, quality assurance, and/or education). The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment with academic rank in the Department of Critical Care Medicine. We are recruiting multiple faculty positions in Critical Care Medicine, with strategic priorities in POCUS, neurocritical care, and educational leadership. At least one position will prioritize an early to mid career investigator with an ICU relevant research program.

Qualified applicants will hold an MD degree (or equivalent). Candidates must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Members of the Department of Critical Care Medicine enjoy a competitive compensation package, including a generous benefits plan. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.

Faculty and their dependents are eligible for an extensive benefits package including prescription drug coverage, vision care, dental care, long term disability insurance, life insurance and access to the Employee and Family Assistance Program. Employees also participate in a pension plan. Tuition assistance is available for qualifying employees, their spouses and dependent children. Queen’s values families and is pleased to provide a ‘top up’ to government parental leave benefits for eligible employees on maternity/parental leave. In addition, Queen’s provides partial reimbursement for eligible daycare expenses for employees with dependent children in daycare. For more information on employee benefits, see Queen’s Human Resources.

Queen’s University is recognized nationally for the quality of its undergraduate and graduate programs, which attracts outstanding students. Queen’s University is an integral part of the vibrant Kingston community in the heart of the Thousand Islands region of southeastern Ontario. It has a community spirit and amenities unmatched by any other Canadian university. The University and the region offer an outstanding academic and community environment (www.queensu.ca).

The University invites applications from all qualified individuals. Queen's is strongly committed to employment equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and encourages applications from Black, racialized/visible minority and Indigenous people, women, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQA+ persons. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority, including any qualified individuals who have a legal work status in Canada. Please indicate in your application if you have a valid legal work status in Canada. Applications from all qualified candidates will be considered in the applicant pool.

Those interested in this position should submit a complete application package, including the following documents:

  • a cover letter, summarizing expertise, qualifications, and accomplishments relevant to the position. The cover letter should also indicate whether you will require a work permit and/or require support with an extension of your work permit in the future.
  • a Curriculum Vitae; and,
  • the names and full contact information of three referees
  • a research dossier outlining an academic plan and career goals; and,
  • an educational dossier is encouraged.

Complete applications are to be directed to:
