Job Description

Description

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences (http://www.ucalgary.ca/dcns/) at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, in partnership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the McCaig Bone and Joint Institute, invites applications for a Contingent Term appointment for a neurosurgery spine specialist at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level.

The successful candidate will join the Section of Neurosurgery at the University of Calgary. The position will be based at the Foothills Medical Center. They will be expected to provide exceptional clinical care in adult spine surgery and participate in acute care coverage for spine surgery, as well as occasionally for adult general neurosurgery.

The candidate will collaborate with an established, comprehensive University of Calgary spine program comprising four other neurosurgeons and eight orthopedic surgeons, all similarly focused on spine surgery. They will also function in a multidisciplinary setting that includes engagement of a comprehensive 18-person neurosurgery division, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, and orthotics.

Protected time for academic activity will be negotiated depending on the candidate's track record and academic plan. The successful candidate will be supported with start-up funding commensurate with their expertise, prior accomplishments and proposed academic plan. The candidate will also be expected to participate in teaching residents, clinical and research fellows, medical students, and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to start their position between July 1, 2026, and September 30, 2026 (negotiable).

The Section of Neurosurgery and the combined spine program benefit from affiliation with both the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the McCaig Bone and Joint Institute. Either institute will engage the appropriate clinician-scientist applicant.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications include an MD and Canadian Royal College specialist certification in Neurosurgery or equivalent. The candidate must have completed a dedicated clinical fellowship in adult spine surgery, resulting in independent competence across the spectrum of disease presentations (may be expected or in progress, but must be completed before commencing). The candidate must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. All applicants must display a strong track record of scholarly activity, including 12 or more peer-reviewed publications within the last ten years, with some (preferably most) related to spine disease.

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must additionally show evidence of an established, externally peer-reviewed, funded spine research program (funding at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent National/International organization), a publication record of original research studies, including senior or first author manuscripts. Applicants must show evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.

Applicants at the Professor level must provide evidence of a continuous, externally funded, well-established spine research program (funding at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization), an outstanding academic publication record as evidence by continuous publication in high impact journals or leading in the field according to the DORA principles, demonstrate ability to lead research teams, outstanding teaching and graduate and post-doctoral fellowship supervision record, and evidence of academic service and/or leadership.

Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application online via University of Calgary Careers webpage using the ‘Apply Now’ link.

Please be aware that the application process allows for a maximum of four attachments. Your four application attachments should be organized to contain the following (you are encouraged to merge documents to reduce the number of attachments):
