The Organization and The Department

Guelph General Hospital (GGH) is a 216-bed acute care facility that includes a 24-bed closed ICU and stepdown unit. Our Anesthesiology Department provides daily coverage for up to 8 operating rooms, supporting a full spectrum of adult and pediatric surgical services, including high-volume regional vascular and bariatric programs.  

We are entering a period of transformational growth and innovation in surgical care delivery and our need for Anesthesiologists is growing. As part of this, we are actively reimagining how we staff and support our Anesthesia Department—with a clear focus on ensuring a sustainable, balanced, and fulfilling work life for our physicians. Our department prioritizes professional excellence and personal wellness, allowing for long-term engagement and satisfaction.

Our department is fully equipped with modern anesthesia equipment and the latest resources. We have expanded and are continuing to grow our team-based care model through the integration of Anesthesia Assistants (AAs), who now provide robust support to enhance efficiency and reduce workload.  

We are seeking highly motivated Anesthesiologists to join a collaborative and forward-looking group of 11 physicians. Full-time, part-time, and locum opportunities are available. Start dates are flexible.

Compensation is via independent fee-for-service OHIP billing, plus applicable on-call stipends. Call assignments are proportional to work percentage and currently averages 1:8 for full-time members. We maintain a dedicated weekday obstetrical anesthesia on-call system, with a generous hospital-funded stipend provided for that service, in addition to HOCC stipend for OR call coverage.  

Teaching opportunities are available through an optional affiliation with the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University.

Qualifications

•      FRCPC in Anesthesiology and independent registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). We welcome applications from 5th or 4th year Canadian Anesthesiology residents.

•      CPSO Pathway A applicants with American Board Certification in Anesthesiology.

•      Temporary supervision may be considered for candidates eligible for independent CPSO certification (Guelph General Hospital cannot provide any form of academic appointments or sponsorship).

•      We also welcome Family Practice Anesthesiologists for short- and long-term locum opportunities.
