Job Description

The Division of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta and the Section of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Alberta Health Services-Edmonton Zone are inviting trainees to apply for a one-year Head and Neck Oncology with Microsvascular Surgical Reconstruction fellowship commencing immediately.

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 100 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. Alberta Health Services is Canada’s largest and only provincial health region providing services for a population of over 5 million people.

While the fellowship is primarily based out of the University of Alberta Hospital (UAH), the Division of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery in Edmonton provides comprehensive services for a wide geographic area for northern Alberta and neighboring provinces. The UAH is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research, and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from across western and northern Canada and offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized services within cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, renal critical care, emergency and trauma care, and a state-of-the-art burn unit. The hospital is also home to Alberta Health Services organ and tissue transplant program, which is recognized as a national leader in both success rates and transplants volumes.

This program is designed to be a mix of both clinical and research opportunities. Fellows will be expected to participate in regular new patient and follow up clinics as well as on-call services and emergency room consultations, based on the fellow’s interests and department needs.  Scholarly activity is also expected, including basic, translational, or clinical research projects carried out with appropriate attending staff guidance. The individual will also provide locum-tenens coverage for the duration of the fellowship. Compensation will be based on Fee for Services for clinical locum services along with a fellowship stipend.

Selection criteria will include demonstrated interest in Head and Neck Oncology, clinical skills and experience, academic achievements. Candidates must be eligible for specialist licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.  Interested qualified applicants should forward their CV accompanied with the names of three references, by May 15, 2026; however the competition will remain open until filled:

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.  We thank all applicants for their interest, only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted.

The University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services hires on the basis of merit. We are committed to the principle of equity in employment.  We welcome diversity and encourage applications from all qualified women and men, including persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and Aboriginal persons.
