Job Description

Position Description:

Horizon Health Network requires a full-time General Practitioner split 0.5FTE for their Psychiatric Inpatient service on 2SE, at the DECH and 0.5FTE for their Community based Victoria Mental Health Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

They would be an active member of the Department of Psychiatry in Fredericton and the multidisciplinary team serving adult patients admitted for severe mental disorders.

All members of the Department participate in regular Departmental meetings as well as regular educational sessions. Most members also participate in clinical supervision of medical students and residents, as they have affiliations with Dalhousie and Memorial Universities.

Job Duties:

  • Reports to the Chief of Psychiatry for all clinical issues and or operational issues
  • Respect client confidentiality, privacy, and autonomy.
  • Demonstrate a respectful attitude toward others, working effectively and collaboratively as a member of a diverse inter-professional clinical team.
  • Undertake comprehensive medical assessments (e.g. review of systems/ medical stability for particular treatment setting, history of medical and psychiatric disorders, evaluating common medical issues for people with a mental disorder, and synthesis of information from client records, collateral sources, and previously performed objective test results);
  • Liaise with clients’ circle of care (e.g. clinician, community pharmacists, community clinicians (if applicable), medical specialists and other physicians);
  • Select and order individualized diagnostic tests/investigations according to best practices. Interpret and respond to test results for diagnosis and management;
  • Develop a care formulation and working diagnoses and establish goals of care in collaboration with clients, their families and the multidisciplinary team;
  • Determine client medication needs as part of the overall management plan: Review periodically, the indication for prescribed medications, order medications in accordance with organizational standards and guidelines.
  • Review client medications based on client risk profile, in collaboration with client’s clinicians as indicated, and support regular medication reconciliation with a focus on reducing harm;
  • Provide trauma-informed and culturally safe care;
  • Provide quality care within the scope of practice and as agreed with the Medical Director of Addiction & Mental Health services which can include but is not limited to new assessments, pain consultations, medication reviews.
  • In collaboration with Clinicians, facilitate connection to additional services and supports (e.g. medical specialty care; self-help);
  • Participate in weekly scheduled inter-professional team care conferences to support client care planning;
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings;
  • Contribute to the completion of the client discharge summary;
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement through educational opportunities and participate in inter-professional team mentorship and support.
  • As a member of the clinic the Physician participates in such teaching activities as identified by the Medical Director.
  • Maintain timely, clear, and accurate health records in adherence to Horizon Health Network documentation policies and subject to clinical or practice audits to ensure standards of care are met.
  • Complete and adhere to the timelines required for third party documentation
  • Provide support for knowledge translation/exchange to other health care providers and community partners as it relates to Operational Stress Injuries;
  • Make efforts to stay up to date on emerging evidence in relation to Operational Stress Injuries and how their physical health correlates such as comorbidity;

Hours of Work:

Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (variable)

Salaried

The candidate will be remunerated on a salaried model.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid license to practice medicine in the Province of New Brunswick.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
  • Must have current malpractice insurance from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) appropriate to the category of practice.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Good attendance and work record.
  • Physically, mentally able to perform assigned duties.
  • Excellent experience in multidisciplinary team working.

Expected Start Date:

As soon as possible

Incentives:

$50,000.00 accompanied by a 2 year return of service. 

Relocation reimbursement of up to $8,000.

About the Facility:

Horizon’s Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECRH) is located in the city of Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick. This regional hospital is recognized as a centre of expertise for reconstructive and restorative medicine and a leading plastic surgery centre.

The DECRH provides undergraduate and graduate education experience for approximately 20 health disciplines and is a certified partner of the Dalhousie University Family Medicine program and the University of New Brunswick nursing program, and houses the Veterans Health Unit.

A $250 million project to provide a state-of-the-art environment for maternal and newborn, intensive care, surgical care, day surgery, ambulatory procedures, phlebotomy, and health records service is underway (project schedule spans August 2016 to March 2024).

Recent achievements at this facility include increased capacity on 4 West, completion of an Emergency Risk Assessment review to reduce workplace violence and a Recreation Therapy Responsive Behaviours project.
