Job Description

The Hospital Medical Director (HMD) is a key physician leadership role within the Edmonton Corridor of Alberta Health Services.

This 0.10 FTE position reports directly to the Associate Corridor Medical Lead (ACML), the HMD is responsible for all physician-related matters within their assigned hospital and collaborates closely with operational leaders on strategic and clinical issues requiring medical input or leadership.

The HMD is expected to demonstrate a corridor-wide perspective, contribute to the broader AHS vision, and model excellence in leadership. The HMD will foster a culture of quality improvement; ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for patients, staff, and physicians; and uphold AHS commitments to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism, and Anti-Oppression.

Appointment, Accountability & Performance Review

In accordance with AHS Medical Staff Bylaws (MSB) Article 2.7 and applicable Medical Staff Rules (MSRs), the HMD’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Leadership & Governance

  • Serve as the senior physician leader for the Hospital, providing oversight for facility-based front-line physicians.
  • Perform all duties outlined in AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Policies.
  • Provide effective, transparent, and consistent communication to support practitioner engagement.
  • Collaborate with the assigned Operational Manager(s) to support efficient daily operations.
  • Advocate for high-quality, safe patient care across the facility and its service areas.
  • Liaise with external partners, community stakeholders, and operational leaders under the direction of the ACML and CML.
  • Identify and escalate organizational risks (clinical, operational, political, media) to the appropriate leadership.
  • Attend meetings as requested by the ACML or Medical Affairs.
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of site-related policies, pathways, and guidelines.
  • Uphold AHS/CPSA bylaws, rules, codes of conduct, and policies when advocating for patient safety and quality (MSB Article 4.2.3).

 

Human Resources & Physician Engagement

  • Support physician leadership development within the Edmonton Corridor.
  • Promote ongoing education and participate in accreditation activities.
  • Collaborate with Corridor Clinical Department Leads (CDLs) on performance reviews, quality initiatives, service planning, and other departmental objectives.
  • Ensure medical staff compliance with relevant legislation, bylaws, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in Search and Recommendation Committees for physician hiring and leadership recruitment, emphasizing inclusive hiring practices.

 

Complaints & Conflict Resolution

  • Participate in the investigation and resolution of complaints involving medical staff at the Site, in compliance with MSB and MSR.
  • Address and resolve physician-related conflicts within the Site in accordance with AHS bylaws and processes.

 

Workforce Planning

The HMD contributes to the Practitioner Workforce Plan to ensure appropriate recruitment, retention, and alignment of clinical resources.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs to develop and maintain a comprehensive physician workforce plan.
  • Participate in privileging recommendations for practitioners working within the facility.
  • Support the development of future medical leaders and encourage physician involvement in teaching and assessment to strengthen recruitment and retention.

 

Recruitment & Retention

  • Ensure medical staff comply with AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Zonal Rules.
  • Ensure Locum Physician Evaluations are completed appropriately.
  • Support the orientation of new practitioners to AHS systems, processes, and site operations.
  • Represent the perspectives and resource needs of the medical staff within the Facility in planning and advocacy.

 

Resource Utilization & Infrastructure

  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs and Site Operational Leadership to promote optimal resource use.
  • Assist with assessment and preparation of equipment requests during budget planning.
  • Support planning for future site needs and service development.
  • Assist in decision-making regarding admissions, discharges, and resource allocation during periods of surge, shortage, or emergency (e.g., pandemics, disasters).
  • Advocate for medical staff needs related to infrastructure and operational resources.

Candidates must be Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) certified, be eligible to work in Canada, and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.
