The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) invites applications for the position of a Medical Director in the Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit. The position is a 0.25 FTE position with the DCCM.
Applicants must have a medical degree; fellowship training in critical care medicine with certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent; and dedicated, subspecialty training or experience in cardiovascular care. Applicants must also be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
The successful applicant will be able to provide excellent care as an intensivist at any of the four general systems intensive care units operated by the DCCM within Alberta Health Services – Calgary Corridor. The CVICU Medical Director will provide collaborative leadership in clinical operations, quality improvement, and patient safety within a multidisciplinary cardiovascular ICU. The successful candidate will participate in key zone‑level and departmental committees, ensure adherence to provincial policies and accreditation standards, and lead site‑specific physician meetings and initiatives. This role includes oversight of clinical processes, coordination of ICU admissions and discharges, call‑schedule support, and engagement with service departments and regional referral partners. The Medical Director will also contribute to residency education, faculty development, and compliance with Royal College and CFPC training requirements. In addition, the position supports departmental research activities, promotes scholarly output, and fosters a culture of high‑quality data collection and academic engagement.
Candidates must demonstrate an established reputation for excellence in clinical care and scholarly productivity. Additional interests and training in research, education or quality improvement will be viewed as a major asset. The position supports departmental educational, research, quality‑assurance, and administrative initiatives, with an expectation that at least 20% of ICU‑related time is dedicated to one or more of these areas. The candidate is expected to have a Major Clinical appointment with the Cumming School of Medicine within the University of Calgary and be a member of the University of Calgary Medical Group.
In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Alberta Health Services and The University of Calgary respects, appreciates, and encourages diversity.
The applicant will be joining 35 intensivists with varied backgrounds. Critical care is provided in an integrated manner across the four Alberta Health Services – Calgary Corridor operated adult teaching hospitals that serve 2 million residents. As an integrated clinical and academic department, we have robust clinical, research, education, and medical leadership interests. We are committed to building a team with a variety of backgrounds, skills and pursuits.
