Job Description

This exciting public health physician position with Northern Medical Services Division of the College of Medicine, is based within northern Saskatchewan’s Population Health Unit (PHU). The northern PHU is a unique collaborative of the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Athabasca Health Authority for provision of population health services in northern Saskatchewan.

The PHU provides specialist support and expertise, and works with partners to preserve and enhance the health of the predominantly Indigenous communities across northern Saskatchewan. The PHU team includes Medical Health Officers, Public Health Inspectors, Epidemiologist, Nurse Specialists, Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner, Public Health Nutritionist, Health Promotion Coordinator and others. The unit’s program activities include health status monitoring; communicable disease control (including outbreak management); infection prevention and control; immunization program support; public health inspection; environmental health monitoring; health promotion; and advocacy for healthy public policy; amongst others.

The unit is located in beautiful northern Saskatchewan – a boreal forest and lake area of excellent recreational and cross-cultural opportunities.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be licensed, or eligible to be licensed, to practice medicine in the Province of Saskatchewan, and a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (or equivalent) is preferred. A medical degree, and Masters in a public health related field or equivalent combination of post-graduate education and experience may also be considered.

Additional Information:

Working with Medical Health Officer colleagues (including shared on call duties), they will carry out the responsibilities and duties of an MHO as specified by the province’s Public Health Act and Regulations, including communicable disease control, environmental health, disease and injury prevention, surveillance, health protection and promotion. The position offers excellent teaching and research opportunities. The MHO will have academic relationships with the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine; Division of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (Community Health and Epidemiology), Academic Family Medicine, and the School of Public Health.
