Job Description
The Department of Emergency Medicine (Alberta Health Services – Calgary Corridor) is accepting applications for the Deputy Department Head – Workforce Planning & Retention. This role focuses on physician workforce planning, recruitment, retention, and professional development across the Calgary Corridor Emergency Departments.
Accountabilities / Deliverables
Leadership & Accountability
- Reports to and is accountable to the Calgary Corridor Clinical Department Head (CCDH) for workforce-related matters.
- Provides strategic leadership in physician workforce planning, recruitment, and retention.
Physician Workforce Planning & Recruitment
- Co-leads physician recruitment initiatives in partnership with the ED Hiring Lead.
- Supports workforce planning to ensure appropriate physician coverage across sites.
- Leads, in collaboration with Site Leads and Schedulers, the management of physician requests for site changes, FTE change and transition to retirement
- Collaborates with the CCDH, Site Leads and PRC to strategize, build and implement novel staffing solutions such as Alternative Relationship Programs (e.g., ED Overcapacity Physician virtual physician services) and online emergency physician services (e.g., Rapid Doctor at Home)
Retention & Engagement
- Develops and implements physician retention strategies (e.g., sabbatical program)
- Supports engagement initiatives to promote physician satisfaction and sustainability.
- Works collaboratively with Site Chiefs to identify and address workforce challenges.
Policy Development
· Ensures that the Physician Resource Committee Policy living document is updated and shared with the DEM members at large on annual basis
Physician Development & Performance
- Oversees annual physician periodic reviews.
- Coordinates continuing professional development (CPD), including clinical and operational skill development.
- Supports physician leadership development and succession planning.
Committees, Representation & Governance
- Chairs the Physician Resource Committee (PRC)
- Attends the Calgary Corridor Executive Council meetings with the Department Head and other Deputy Department Heads (monthly)
Collaboration & Support
- Works with Site Chiefs and operational leadership to align workforce needs with clinical operations.
- Contributes to departmental planning related to workforce sustainability and service delivery.
Qualifications
- CCFP (EM) or FRCPC required
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
- Proficient in English (written and spoken)

Community Information
The Calgary Department of Emergency Medicine encompasses two emergency medicine residency programs and four hospital sites seeing over 300,000 patients per year. In addition to a full spectrum of high acuity clinical medicine, trauma, and cardiac care, we have active programs in human patient simulation and EM ultrasound. Calgary is also the home of STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society), one of North America’s longest operating rotary wing aeromedical systems. The Calgary Department of Emergency Medicine has a growing academic program with research and teaching opportunities.
