Job Description

The University of Manitoba, Department of Surgery, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Shared Health Manitoba invite applications for a full-time academic adult orthopaedic spine surgeon to commence on July 1, 2026 (or on a date mutually agreed upon). The successful candidate will join the Winnipeg Spine Program primarily at Health Sciences Centre with secondary surgical sites at Concordia Hospital and Maples Surgical Centre in Winnipeg, MB.

This is a geographical full-time, contingent position and the successful candidate will be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (or higher depending on current academic rank) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Successful applicants must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or international equivalent, be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and must have completed at least one year of fellowship training in adult orthopaedic spine surgery with the expectation to be comfortable in the management of spine pathologies involving the cervical, thoracolumbar, and lumbosacral spine. The orthopaedic spine surgeon candidate would have an ability to deal with spine trauma, degenerative conditions, spine oncology, and infections.

The successful candidate will join an established and cohesive group of fellowship trained academic adult spine surgeons from orthopaedics and neurosurgery. They will be expected to participate in approximately 1-in-8 spine call.

Elective clinic and operating time will be provided. Teaching of medical students, orthopaedic residents, and spine fellows affiliated with the University of Manitoba will form part of normal daily activities. There is an expected active participation in weekly rounds directed at the education of residents and medical students as well as supplementary weekly spine fellows rounds.

As an academic group, the successful candidate will be expected to both participate in and eventually lead specific research activities. To fulfill this metric, candidates with an advanced degree supporting research and/or education will be given preference.

The Winnipeg Spine Program (WSP) is a high-volume spine practice targeted to perform over 1500 operations annually. The majority of the case mix are instrumented fusions as well as MIS/day surgery cases. The WSP is the major referral spine program for the province of Manitoba and adjacent regions (approximately 1.6 million people).

The Spine Assessment Clinic (SAC) is staffed by advance practice physiotherapists and is an adjunct clinical resource to assist the spine surgeon with triage of spine referrals to promote expedited and efficient care.

We employ 2 full time research assistants to help enroll and maintain the Canadian Spine Outcomes Network (CSORN) as part of our commitment to quality assurance in spine care. In addition, there are research partnerships with the Orthopaedic Innovation Centre to biomechanically evaluate materials and spine constructs. The research team includes clinical study coordinators, and mechanical and bio-medical engineers.

Team cohesiveness has been key to the success of the Winnipeg Spine Program, and, therefore, the successful candidate must have a team-oriented approach to clinical and academic work and appropriate supportive skills to achieve these goals.

Winnipeg is a city of over 750,000 people and has many outdoor and indoor activities to suit individual preferences. Winnipeg is home to professional hockey, football, soccer, baseball, symphony, and ballet organizations. There is a vibrant arts community which hosts an extensive city festival program. Winnipeg is surrounded by lake country that boasts access to many summer and winter outdoor adventures.

Equity and diversity are essential to excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. To address the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, in recognition of the underrepresentation of members of historically and currently underrepresented groups, and pursuant to the Manitoba Human Rights Commission Policy 1-7, preference will be given to applicants who self-identify as women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized persons, as well as other historically underrepresented groups such as 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, intersex, asexual, and other diverse sexual identities).

The University of Manitoba and Shared Health are committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion to promote opportunities in hiring, promotion, and tenure (where applicable) for systemically marginalized groups who have been excluded from full participation at the University and the larger community including Indigenous Peoples, women, racialized persons, persons with disabilities and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, intersex, asexual, and other diverse sexual identities). All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
