Job Description

Pediatric Spine Surgeon
BC Children’s Hospital
Provincial Health Services Authority
Regular Full Time, 1.0 FTE
Vancouver, BC Canada

The Department of Orthopedics at BC Children’s Hospital invites applications for a full-time academic Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon in the areas of pediatric spinal deformities. BC Children’s serves as the major referral centre for infants and children throughout British Columbia and the Yukon (a region with a population of 5.1 million).

The successful candidate will have an interest in the orthopaedic management of children with spinal deformity conditions. The candidate will have completed a residency in orthopedic surgery, will be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. The ideal candidate will have completed a fellowship in pediatric and adult spinal surgery with a focus on care of children with adolescent idiopathic, early onset, neuromuscular, congenital, and syndromic scoliosis as well as spondylolysis/listhesis, cervical spine disorders, and other associated conditions.

The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team of professional and administrative staff. This will involve the collaborative assessment and treatment planning using a family centred care model in the delivery of surgical care of patients and their families. The candidate will be expected to take part in both pediatric orthopedic trauma call and the separate pediatric spine call.

The successful candidate will have an interest in research and clinical outcome evaluation. It is preferred that candidates should have completed or intend to complete a master’s degree or higher in business administration, clinical epidemiology, medical education, global health or health sciences. The successful candidate will also have shown an interest in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion through continuous development, modelling inclusive behaviours and proactively managing bias. The successful candidate will be appointed to the University of British Columbia Department of Orthopedics at a level commensurate with their experience.

About BC Children's Hospital

BC Children's Hospital provides expert health care, including mental health care, for the most seriously ill or injured children from across British Columbia and the Yukon. Child development and rehabilitation is provided by Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, a program of BC Children's. In addition to providing specialized pediatric services — many of which are not available elsewhere in the province – BC Children's is the province's leading teaching and research facility for child health. As a hospital of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), BC Children’s strategic action plan supports PHSA’s strategic direction, outlined in the PHSA Service Plan. We are grateful to all the First Nations who have cared for and nurtured the lands and waters around us for all time, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Nation), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) on whose unceded and ancestral territory BC Children’s is located.

BC Children’s Hospital is part of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), which plans, manages and evaluates specialized health services with the BC health authorities to provide equitable and cost-effective health care for people throughout the province. Our values reflect our commitment to excellence and include: Respect people – Be compassionate – Dare to innovate – Cultivate partnerships – Serve with purpose. PHSA and BC Children’s Hospital are committed to employment equity, encouraging all qualified individuals to apply. We recognize that our ability to provide the best care for our diverse patient populations relies on a rich diversity of skills, knowledge, background and experience. We value a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

One of PHSA’s North Star priorities is to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism, which includes dismantling barriers to health care employment at every level. We welcome Indigenous individuals to apply and/or contact the Sanya'kula Team (Indigenous Recruitment & Employee Experience) for support.

Indigenous-specific anti-racism initiatives are rooted in addressing the unique forms of discrimination, historical and ongoing injustices, and marginalization faced by Indigenous peoples. These initiatives align with an Indigenous rights-based approach, recognizing the inherent rights and self-determination of Indigenous communities. PHSA must uphold legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents such as including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study.
